View Full Version : Oil, Oil Everywhere :-(
Well, the wife got home last night saying that there was smoke coming out from under the bonnet. I had a look and could see only oil... over everything behind the engine on the firewall side, mostly at the front (of the engine, towards the cambelt). All over the firewall and the alternator etc. The smoke was the oil on the exhaust manifold.
So now my question. I suspect that I've blown the head gasket of the rear bank.
Anyone have this experience? Can anyone convince me not to spend the $300 on the headgasket kit because I've got it all wrong?

Same thing is happening to me at the moment.
Oil leaking from the oil cap too, right?
Burning smell from inside the cab especially when the fan is on?
It happened to me 3 weeks ago but right now it's okay and the smell is going away.
I noticed this happened just after i had refilled the engine with more oil on a long trip.
Have you recently overfilled the engine with oil?
If not, it looks like you need to get your valve stem seals fixed.
The sh*t thing is, if the oil continues to leak from the oil cap, it will drip onto the starter motor, and soon after, the starter motor will fail and you'll have to get a new or reconditioned one.
Keep an eye on it
I did the valve seals about three months ago and ever since then it hasn't used any oil at all :D
The wife did say that about a week ago she checked the water and found it low. The overflow tank was dry and she couldn't see any water when the radiator cap was removed. She refilled it and it hasn't used any water since. I'm a bit confused as using water is another sigh of a blown headgasket.
Also, can I remove the head with the rocker gear/cam still attached. Or are the head bolts under the rocker gear?
Cheers

Degrease the snot outta the engine bay, check the oil and water, start the engine and have a bloody good look around to see if you can spot where its commin from.
Then you can make a decision on what to change, it could be somethin simple ifn yur lucky.:D

Not a head gasket, too much oil, too quick
Steam clean the engine, check rocker cover gaskets, put a new flat "o" ring around the filler cap
Sounds like crankshaft pulley or, passenger side sump gasket near oil pump.

:stoopid: if the pcv valve is blocked it will pressurize the sump and oil will normally piss out of your oil cap.As others have said clean it all up first then check to see where its leaking from.

OK, silly question time. Where/What is the PCV valve? I pulled the dipstick out having not long stopped the engine and preasurized air came out of the filler tube. So the sump is being pressurized. And after giving the engine a clean I can clearly see that oil is coming out the filler cap. Is the PCV valve failing good or bad... i.e. cheap or expensive???

OK I've found the PCV valve and I now know what it does. I'll get a new one inthe morning and see if it's the problem. The book says it should rattle, mine doesn't.
Oh please Mitsy GOD in the sky let this be the nice simple problem :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

Don't bother even asked Mr Mitsu sales for the price on a new PCV valve.
If you do, take a hundred, there won't be much change left.
Get the valve to work at all costs, soak it, clean it, throw it, jump on it, beg ... but get it to work.
Maybe change the grade or quality of the oil you use.
Hope this helps
Thanks to all for the suggestions. They have saved me almost $300 :D
The PCV valve was indeed gummed up. I priced a new one at $27 so brought that instead of trying to clean the old one. I also discovered that the pipes on the rocker covers were blocked solid. Especially the front one. It took me about 2 hours to unclog them because of the double skin that the rocker covers have.
So, next time I'm in Oz... my shout down at the local drinking establishment :D
