View Full Version : Question for those with upgraded engine mounts

I've to my set of the firmest engine mounts you can get, thanks to Megatron, and I've found someone that can install them next week (stupid Jamboree making my regular workshop booked out  ).

My question is what can I expect once I get them installed?

Will it help with axle tramp / traction?

As some of you will know, I've got a (sprung centred) button clutch installed too - which I think is contributing to a hell of alot of engine movement (sometimes when I get the launch or gear change wrong - it feels like the engine is going to shake itself right out thru the bonnet), so I'm wondering what to expect in those situations.

All meaningful feedback appreciated.

Cheers.

Mike i've got all of my engine mounts re-done. I got the side one from RPW and the rest from megatron.

Dude it doesnt change day to day drivability, but it made quite a difference with shifts. the car felt to have more once i engauged the clutch after a shift at WOT. I loved them and recommend them to all

Thanks guys. So Jase, have you replaced all 4 engine mounts?? because I could only get drivers side, front and rear off Megatron. His supplier doesn't make the gearbox side one.

I repack std mounts with Polyeurethane a fair bit. It doesn't really help axel tramp but its a cheap solution to stuffed mounts.

You will notice a lot of high frequency vibrations which will rattle anyting thats even a tiny bit loose though. Thats the drawback.

Does it make much difference to the overall comfort? As in does it shake the s#$t out of the car? I know there would be some increase in transfer of engine vibration, always just been a bit worried about how much....dont want to feel like im sitting on a harley at the lights!

Just picked the car up from having these installed, and took it for a strap. All I can say is WOW!!!

First impression when I started the car was "what vibrations???", but in reality - there is more vibration evident thru the car, but certainly not to the point of being unpleasant. The biggest first impression was the difference in the sound of it....... I don't quite know how to explain it - but I guess the sound of the engine is being ampified by the car itself due to the increase in vibrations being transferred thru the mounts.

Getting it off the line: this was when I fell in love with them. Gone was the hideous shuddering which was evident previously when I let the clutch out too slow. Rather than shaking itself around inside the engine bay - the engine now just transfers all its power straight to the wheels. The only downside to this is it's alot easier to "chirp" off the line without even trying.

Shifting: Another element that really makes me glad I got these. Similar to launching the car - I used to get horrible shudders and shakes if I didn't rev match each gear change presicely. This is no longer the case, making the car much more enjoyable to drive.

As yet - I haven't really driven it in much traffic, but I'm sure the stiffer engine mounts will make that alot better too.

Also - surprisingly enough, my stock engine mounts were all still intact  . Which means the problems I was experiencing wasn't the result of busted engine mounts, just the engine moving around heaps when the 2 tonnes of clamping force from my clutch engaged against the drivetrain.

Hey mate.

According to your profile, your car is an auto. If this is the case - I seriously wouldn't worry about changing the engine mounts unless yours are broken. The reason I had to do this mod was pretty much because the button clutch I had installed would make the engine shake violently in certain circumstances - and obviously this doesn't apply to your situation.

Also - being an owner of a 3.5L auto as well, I know how they already have an extremely irritating amount of vibration while stopped at the lights (for example) with the transmission in "D". Heavy duty engine mounts would only make this more annoying and uncompfortable.

I had a similar experience to black beard, all positive except for the minor transfer of more engine noise through the cabin, but I am used to it now, and love the feeling of being able to put the power down more effectively.

Well im in the same boat really, just so jacked off with the auto.....well its just gotta go!
Cheers for the info mate, im pretty convinced that these are the goods now!...prob should update my profile hey. Got the man gearbox on a pallet in the garage and just waiting for the xtreme clutch to be delivered from Adelaide.

Well in that case - hell yeah, get yourself some of these and throw them in while you're swapping the gearbox over. See here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40338) if you are want to get them off Megatron.

Oh and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with autos..... as long as you absolutely no interest in improving the performance of the car. My old car is being put to good use as the missus's ride - and she couldn't be happier with it.

Well yeah I must admit there will be times when I will miss the auto....mainly on victoria road in traffic and at any hill!

hey all ....i am a tight **** and always try to repair things were possible...this week i repaired all four of the sloppy mounts in my tr magna...it is time consuming but gives great results...using of all things peices of rubber cut from the side wall of an old tyre to take up the slop in the mounts.you need to get as much in as you can either side of the centre hole. Because the mounts colapse one way cos of the weight of the motor over time you need to apply pressure to it to move it back to pack the rubber in both sides..stops all that banging and lurching moving from park to drive and vise versa and on take off etc...:)

What do u need pics for.... it sounds pretty straight forward to me.... mi drivers side mount is actually pertruding out of the bracket..... mi guess is that i just hammer it back in and use hardened rubber and shove in the gaps.... there are some.... have a look at ur own engine mounts urself.

Gas-Hed knows wat im talkin bout.

yeah mine has done this too, have had it in there for over 18 months now, dont know if its something that happens to all solid mounts eventually?

for about 25 bucks u can make them perform better and last at least another year or so, giving u plenty of time to save for the real deal.
i've done this to all of mine and the difference is amazing.
