After just over a year of service my amp has decied to die on me.
Every now and then the music will turn off and then a few hours later it will turn on again when i come back to the car, but no it wont turn on at all. however if i hit the amo it makes a whirring noise like when its working proberly but there are no lights on anymre and still no sound. i've checked all the fuses and power wires and they seem fine. i have heard that a common problem is a blown MOSFET, but of course i have no idea what that is or how to fix it.

Any ideas, if its any help its a Audiobarn A440T or something like that!
cheers,

What? It turns off by itself? Doesn't turn on? I reckon its in the power stage since no lights turn on. Possibly a loose connection in the amp.....but yeh..audiobahn...hmmm.

seeing as though it 'fixes' temporarily when you hit it, chances are something is loose. Bad connections also cause whirring/alternator whine sounds.

Time for repair! If something electical is playing up I wouldn't risk fire damage, if not for your car, do it for your own safety.
