spent the day with a mate of mine and we cleaned my engine - drained and changed the oil (there was so much gunk in there, dead set hardcore BLACKness), cleaned the engine, changed the oil filter, painted the heat shield thing, was good fun

mmm i took off the heat shield cos every first and second gen ive looked at , at the wreckers that is, had the factory exhuast headers cracked. so i thought that maybe the sheild did the job too good , ie keep the exhaust too hot leading it to crack.
also i think it looks alot better with it off but each to there own. good job painting it but.

Did you use proper heat resistant paint on the heat sheild? If not it will burn around the bolts and stuff...

Other than that looking good!

Oh yeah, take the rocker cover off and give that a spary to, just the two bolts on the top and it will lift off.

last weekend when i did this, i filled the oil up to full, i checked it this morning, and it was the practically the same colour as the oil that i put in there, but it was really gritty, ALSO it was only coming up as being half full. wtf?
i used 20w50, do i need to use a thicker grade? 25 60? anyone have any info? im gonna flush it again so i need to know what oil to put back in there.
cheers.

--No oil slicks have been left anywhere ive parked.
--No blueish smoke.

Filter soaks up a bit after running it something like upto 500ml and since theres usually 1L between low and high oil marks i think thats the culprit :)

What degreaser did you use on your engine? Did you just spray the whole engine and hose it off? I want to degrease the **** off my engine but not sure how safe it is to use the hose under there........

just the $2 one from supercheapauto, worked a charm, as you can see by the puddle all the **** that came off, so what you gotta do, pop ur hood hose it all down (some ppl cover the elecronic parts or whatever, i didnt even bother and it was fine)

so:
- pop hood
- high pressure spray the whole bay
- degrease whole bay
- with a rag, wipe clean the parts where its really filthy, or parts u just want to shine
- degrease again
- rub again if needed
- wait approx 1 min
- degrease again
- high pressure hose the whole bay

should be cheering! thats all i did, and it came out awsome.
only used 1 can of degreaser too, make sure u pile it on coz it will eat thru all the crap :)

i also drained, flushed and put new oil in, with new filter, and changed the spark plugs, i did all that BEFORE i cleaned the engine bay
:D
