View Full Version : Dash Dimmer
After installing my stereo ages ago, I somehow killed the dimmer for my dash lights. Now all the lights just stay at the level they were at when I killed it.
For those out there that have actually screwed around with their dash lighting, does anyone have any idea what could be wrong before I start pulling my dash apart and get the ol' multimeter out.
Any tips at all would be useful.
cheers

I know that the dash dimmer also had a wire going to the Headunit. You may want to check to see if you have wired this up to the headunit either in error or as per the current headunit.. if the headunit supports it.
My Pioneer 5550MP apparently supports the dimmer.. But i couldnt get it going on mine, so i taped off the end and didnt connect it.
Because your Dimmer still works you know its not a fuse. Other thing to check is that the snap together bracket (whatever its called) is still connected to the Dimmer control. (should beable to take off the bottom part of your dash and check under there with a torch.

dimmer - well i have just fixed mine!!! What a bloody effort!!
what happened:
INstalled white face luminous dials - attached the wires to the dimmer control on the right hand side of the instrument cluster - the first thing you have to unplug to pull the facia out!!
Now i originally connected it to the earth and the middle wire!! the middle wire is the adjusting wire - therefore for some reason when i plugged the dimmer unit back together and had the lights on the central lights worked but not the luminous dials and when it was unplugged the luminous dials worked but not the dimmer!!
Solution - change the wires!!
I use the same earth wire as i always had - the black one on the drivers side of the 3, however instead of using the middle wire i use the one on the opposite side!!.
Point to me telling u this:
if you have connected to the middle wire - it is attached to something that affects the dimmer up and down!! therefore - simple check would be to change the connections from the middle wire to the one on the passengers side!!
Thats only if u have used the middle wire - if not - well i got no idea!!
hmm, i write it down it makes it look like and easy solutin - let me tell u - try and find a wire you can use without a multimeter or test light - to fix the problem took nearly 2 hours!!
