View Full Version : Wind noise

I was getting this wind noise coming in my car from the drivers and back drivers side windows, so I bought a whole new window seal which fixed the rear drivers side wind noise, but it didn't fix the drivers side noise. Does anyone else get this wind noise? Not sure where it's coming in exactly, obviously somewhere around the seal. Has anyone got a fix for this?

Outside mirror. Bad aerodynamic design. Makes that whistling sound. Bgr.

I don't think it's the outside mirror as it sounds like wind coming inside the car through the seal, also it doesn't do it on the passenger side. And what is "Bgr" ?

The "wind noise" carries throught the door seal. Open the window and place your hand on the stem of the mirror (to change the aerodynamic shape of it) and u'll hear the difference in the whistle. Do this at 80+. No responsibility taken if u r fined for not having 2 hands on steering wheel tho....
Perhaps passenger door seals better cos it's less used?
Bgr = bugger.

Hmmm. Sounds valid enough, but in your theory the noise should of dissipated when I got a new door seal.

I get the same thing and i've traced it to the plastic cover in the front corner of the window. It's not sticking down properly and allows the tiniest amount of air to pass through it. Because it's right next to the window i can hear it, only above 80km/h though.

Yeah. So there's basically no fix for it then? That's a shame.

not when you're a lazy bastard like me. All it needs is some decent glue and it should fix it right up. Just haven't gotten round to it because i keep forgetting it's there and when it occurs i'm doing 80+, not the most ideal time to glue it hehe.

Thanx to both. This occurs bit less with newer Magnas tho. So the seal makes a diff. That plastic strip - if u put "200 mile tape" on it to change the shape etc, would the sound subside?
I'll be off to meeting, so check further comments later.

Might give something like some tape a go later in the week.

Ive had this problem and got the seal at the front bottom coner of the door replaced. Reason is as we keep closing the window, it stretches this rubber which is quite thin. After some time, it will split and wind gets through. Sometimes even water starts to leak so dont let it get that bad.

Yup.... same deal here, it ended up being that plactic cover in the corner of the window, it was a little out of place which is why the wind was flowing through the creating that annoying noise, i just glued it back in and it solved the prob

The wind noise is a bugger - some black silastic can fix it. The problem usually is the black triange piece of plastic above the mirror.

I CBF at the moment, supercharger will probably drown out the noise :)

The seal at the front bottom corner of the door? I thought the seal was from front to back? The one I replaced was anyway... Which bit do you mean?

lol yeh it gets worse, i left mine like that for ages untill the point where i could hear it with the tunes cranked to the max, i tried tape etc and never worked only for a few days, just superglued it as it was driving me

only problem is now i doubt it will ever come out, which is a good thing i think lol

The black triangle plastic on the door near the side mirror. If you have your door open, wind the window up. its the only black plastic sticking out of the door. The thin rubber which lines it stretches a bit when the window is fully up.

its all part and parcel of having a car with frameless windows..

and yeah, its a pain in the ****.. sometimes when im doing over 80kms/h i prefer to not have the radio or music on (usually if others are in the car) and it gets a tad on the annoying side as all you can hear is the wind whistiling in..

can anyone post a pic up of the problem area and a how-to to fix it.. that way i can fix mine lol

Outside mirror. Bad aerodynamic design. Makes that whistling sound. Bgr.

I find if you're doing 90+ with window down the whistling is increased but not because of the noise coming in easier... I find that you wind the window up to a certain height and the wind stops, I think alot of it can be due to the window glass. The problem is also that with a frameless window, there is no frame that is angled outwards to push airflow slightly away at the front of the window. Makes sense.

might make no sence but it does look hot

Sorry to go offtopic, but you can get fined for not having 2 hands on the steering wheel? What state is that?
NSW they always say its "good practice" but i havent heard of anyone getting fined for it.
Id just lie and say i was changing gear or working the radio or something. Thatll be some new law that will come in soon:
NO CHANGING GEAR WHILE DRIVING - KEEP 2 HANDS ON THE WHEEL! lol

You can't get fined for not having 2 hands on the steering wheel, how the feck do you change gears? With your teeth? .
I think you'll find the rule is that you can't have body parts protruding from the car.

I put some silicon along the black plastic bit near the mirror today, so I'll take it for a drive later and see if it helped.

Disciple

Well the noise is still there. Tho in all fairness I did a pretty crap job with the silicone. I didn't let it cure long enough and some of it stuck to the rubber window moulding. I'll try again when I can leave the door open for ages for it to cure properly, and put more on next time.

I had a the same problem with a TF

Turned out to be air getting in some where between the gutter mould and the roof. &/or the between the mould which holds the window seal/rubber on and the gutter mould.

I dismantled the whole lot and put a bead of silicone on each and reassembled.

There is normally a foam weather strip (which seals the air) between them which could be missing/ripped somwhere.

Hope this helps

Cheers

U're trying to seek logic on some traffic rules....? I wish u luck :)
Did u know that there is a 60 AUD fine if u leave your car unlocked while paying at gas station?
Oups, sorry, off the topic now!
