Do a search first of all. This has been covered before many times. I think you'll find the final outcome will be; way too much time, money and hassle. Probably at a guess looking at $15k.

Cheapest way to do a RWD conversion would be to buy an AWD and modify the transmission so that the front diff was disconnected somehow. I know of EVO's that have done this and from what i've heard it's pretty much the same setup.

Buying an AWD and modding the diff, in my opinion, would be completely stupid - you'll have much more fun with the AWD!

$30+K and 2 months on a hoist (minimum) should get you a nice RWD conversion with a decent rebuilt V8 up front.
So what are you waiting for......... stop asking stupid questions and do it already!!!
Or go and buy yourself a car that's already RWD

Bah, why go RWD when you can go AWD! Just put a few rubber bands joining your front and rear tyres! HEY PRESTO!

Early commodores are of similar dimensions to 1st gen magnas arent they? You could backyard job your 1st gen into rear wheel drive. I know a guy that modifies the width of differentials for a living. I know of a place that can modify tailshafts. A welder and some time will fit the motor and the gearbox. Get one of those Racing fuel cells to fit in the boot/backseat.
There you go kiddies have fun!

Ive heard of Gemini's with standard VN V6's in them running really low times. I would love to see one with an ls1 or something.

Haha yeah this thing was incredible... not too much to look at from the outside (very straight body, and I think VT Calais wheels), but it managed to blow away a Valiant Charger, VS 5.0L, and a Pontiac Transam.
What I was impressed with was that they managed to fit the 308 in the engine bay... the bonnet wasn't cut away or anything. Although, it wasn't running a massive air filter like you usually see sitting on top of 308's.
And the guy who drove it was hilarious! He was 67 years old, was about 4 feet tall, and had a moustache that would make Super Mario jealous.
It was definately the crowd favourite... everyone wanted the Gemmy to kick ***!
I've got a quick video snippet of it warming the real wheels before a run. I'll try find it and post it up later.

My neighbor has recently completed putting in a 4ltr V8 from a toyota soarer into a hilux, what a headache that has been, taken so far 5 months to complete and 8 grand down the toilet, and he did most the work himself, 2 inch lift kit for the body so the engine would fit proper, shorter tailshafts, took 2 weeks just for those, engine mounts, gearbox mounts, wiring, man the list just goes on.
BUT, the thing absolutely hauls, I have been in it a few times, reckon my magna would be scared if it was a drag.lol

There is also the IFS TE/F drag car which is a properly tubbed out RWD drag car running some sort of worked V8. Rumour has it - they have a 1000hp S/C'd magna V6 but are yet to put it in the car.
