View Full Version : No water comes out of Windscreen Washers

Basically when I pull the stalk to spray water on to the windscreen, no water comes out as if the tank is dry with the windscreen wipers continuning to wipe down a dry windscreen. And before anyone asks, yes the windscreen washer bottle is full of water :) .

At first I thought that something was blocking the nozzles, such as dried-up car wax but I've cleaned the nozzles and water is still not coming out. Also, there is no water pressure through the line that leads up to nozzle even when I'm pulling the stalk. You can pinch it as easily as a dried up garden hose.

However, there is a whirring noise which sounds exactly like an electric motor spinning freely with no resistance. So I'm assuming that the component at fault is the windscreen washer pump. (However I have not taken it out as i cbf.)

Has anyone else had this problem before and was it the windscreen washer pump at fault or something else?

The front windscreen is getting awfully dirty  .

I've had ants wander into the washer bottle before - they die and sink to the bottom and can get sucked into the pickup. Could be worth checking that end of the tube before you go taking pumps out.

It takes a while sometimes to come through. I would check that you can suck water through the pump - if you do this while it is running, it also primes it.

There could just be an air lock in the pump.

What I would suggest is to disconnect the hose from the back of the nozzles on the bonnet. Then, grab a helper to pull the window wash arm forward. While the pump is buzzing away, blow down the end of the intake hose. This will simply move everything along and hopefully clear whatever is blocking the system.

With my TH... the bottle would get very warm sitting where it does in the engine bay... and slime would form around the insides of the bottle. That slime would start to clog up the line into the pump.. stopping water getting pumped through. I basically cleaned the bottle up with bleach, very hot water... let it soak for ages... and then shook it hard. Forced water through it with garden hose nozzle.

Hasn't come back, i think because I use a strong washer additive.

You can add metho to reduce the slime as well - not too much or it wrecks the paint.

Its also good for water injection :)

its like 3 bolts to undo the washer bottle, and the pump is right under neath it. couldnt be easier :)

pull it out and make sure everything is connected properly. the hose from the pump to the washers may have fallen out.
