Every time the car goes on a bit of a drive lately I get a petrol smell - has been happening on and off for ages - but seems to be getting stronger before it was just after driving you got out of the car and could smell it in the petrol tank area and not super strong but now you can even smell it with the windows down while the car is driving - I asked Mitsu about it when the car was in for service last two times and tey tried to find it both times and could not and said maybe just injectors and it seemed to get better so I did not stress and then when we got the exhaust etc done I asked those guys and they said it was probably nothing to worry about just maybe the overflow tank or something but it seems to be getting worse i will take it back to someone - probably Mitsu as it should be covered in the extended warranty but want to have some kind of idea what to tell them so they do not fob me off again.... any ideas?

Hi is your car tj magna (i presume so) if so this happend on my parents tj as well they got the catylic converter replaced and after that the fuel smell was gone maybe you should try that it did take 2 mitsi dealers to find the problem

Could be a few things, have you had your car recalled yet? Mitsubishi should have picked up on this if it hasn't but you never know. There was a recall regarding a possible fuel line leak in some magnas.

Could be running rich, could be a dodgy cat converter (mines on it's way out). Maybe take it to an exhaust place to see what they reckon?

I had my flowback (i think thats what its called) line develop a tiny split that after sitting still overnight there was a smell of fuel about the car. Took a little while to trace the source.
Sounds like yours is a intermittent faster source though.

Mine can get really bad in summer.. it's never caused a problem, no visible leaks. But dang it's annoying. Might try replacing the fuel cap first, cat converter 2nd.

My old falcon used to be pretty bad. Changing the fuel filter fixed it for a few months. Something else to try...

I had the same problem on my tj, it was just a faulty Fuel Cap, went and got them to change it over, i found mine was staying closed, when i went to fill up at the service station it would be not tight.
