View Full Version : FIXED! - Rear Windscreen - Brake Light
Hi,
Could anyone with either a TJ Executive or a Verada shed some light on this problem for me please?
My magna came from the dealer with the VR-X rear wing fitted, the problem is that I think when the dealer fitted the wing that they disconnected the brake light situated at the top of the rear windscreen to connect the brake light on the spoiler.
Does anyone know exactly where the wires/cable from this brake light run to as I'd really like to reconnect it somehow if possible, looks kind silly it being there and not working. Or if there is a fuse that could be missing / broken that may be responsible for it not lighting up?
cheers.

When a rear spoiler with a brake light is fitted the light in the rear screen must be disconnected ie you can only have one working legally so I have been told. You should find all factory fitted spoilers will not have he other light connected.
Having said that the connector for the rear screen light will still be there, you just slide a thin screwdriver up each side of the housing to release the locking clips and slide it off, just take a good look and be careful before you remove it.
The spoiler light is suppose to connect to a plug on the right hand side of the boot above the wheel arch. Unfortunately who ever was contracted to fit the XS Tourer pack didn't know this and ran wires down the left hinge and tapped into the loom for the rear lights in my car.
Have fun

Hmm... I know that new cars are supposed to have three brake lamps now but if fitted with four, I thought they were supposed to stay. I thought that was why the new models have the lamp on the top of the rear window. My rear lamp has been disconnected and it's at the base of the window. It's partially obscured by the wing anyway. Mind you, the other day I saw someone with the same setup with all working.

No VR-X That i know of ever had a break light in the wing itself.. Youve got yourself an aftermarket wing buddy.
K thanks guys, it's just that most of the Verada's etc i've seen with spoilers have both working if they are there.....

Well unless the VR-X my father drives is fake or has an aftermarket wing fitted aswell they do....
Any comment from other VR-X owners here to settle this?

I thought it was law that new cars had to have lights in the rear wing?
Oh well...

I know Dan's VR-X has a spoiler light. Not sure if they all light up however.
My spoiler light (TR) lights up but the window one does not.

My VR-X Spoiler has a brake light in it,and all brake lights light up(both sides, spoiler and top of back windscreen)
Any chance you could try and trace the wires and let me know how they're connected?
I'd really like to get mine working again otherwise i'm going to take it out!

Have a look at this extract from ADR 60, I think you'll find paragraph 2 says no as the spoiles is a high mount brake light. This is what I was told about mine, even mitsu didn't know.
High Mounted Brake Lamps
Introduction
The Standards for Registration require passenger cars manufactured on or after 1 July 1989 to be fitted with a central high mounted stop lamp which complies with Australian Design Rule (ADR) No. 60/00. This ADR has since been applied to some other vehicles.
The information in this brochure is based on the requirements contained in that ADR and is intended to assist people who would like to fit a high mounted brake lamp to a vehicle which was not required to comply with ADR 60/...
Guidelines
Lamps fitted according to these guidelines should be safe, give maximum benefit and comply with legal requirements.
1. One or more lamps may be fitted inside the vehicle directly onto the rear window or on the outside of the rear of the vehicle.
2. A single lamp must be fitted centrally. If dual lamps are used, both must be fitted at the same height at equal distances from the centre of the vehicle and on opposite sides of the vehicle.
As per last post remove the upper light and the wiring comes out from the roof lining , it will either be staring you in the face or just tucked back, it should be in no way used for your spoiler.
Thanks mate,
I was just thinking that it may have been disconnected (possibly even cut) elsewhere and used for the connection of the spoiler lamp as opposed to it simply being unplugged at the lamp itself.
I'll take another look on the weekend and see what I can see/find.
cheers.

akko - the plugs are actually still in where hte rear brake light sits - if you pull tha whole section out (two clips) the plug should still be there
if you want a hand let me know and next cruise you atten i will bring a screwdriver and we can have a look/

Manual, sounds good - are you attending tonights cruise by chance?
All sorted, after pulling all the carpet out of the boot and looking at all the wires & cables I couldn't see any signs of it having been disconnected anywhere in there.
I eventually proceeded to pull out my TJ Service Manual and followed the instructions for replacing the globe; during which time I found that it had simply been disconnected at the back of the lamp! It's now plugged back in and working like a charm!

This is very interesting.
My magna, being an Advance, didn't originally have a spoiler, but was added by the Mitsubishi dealer at time of purchase. They've wired it so both the window & spoiler brake lights come on.
As far as I'm concerned, it's got to be more safe having the both connected!
While technically it would appear that it's detectable in theory, I doubt any cop is likily to pick up on it, since it's all stock parts etc. Besides, "I got the car from Mitsubishi like that.", which must have been 100% roadworthy otherwise they wouldn't have been able to sell it in the first place.
