2.6 only mod's for power worth doing is turbocharging the stock motor, which would be fine for quite a while on low psi... ~6-8psi.
A few people have done it, you need at least;
turbo
turbo exhaust manifold and larger cat and cat back exhaust
intercooler and subsequent custom piping (unless someone would copy theirs for you)
emanage (cheapest option and easily all you need)
bov + oil lines etc
wow thats pretty much it, not much really... if i think of anything else.
It'd cost more than 2k$ but nothing else you could do would be worth it in my opinion.
I'd be buying the turbo 2nd hand of ebay (off a skyline owner whose upgrading for e.g.) for not much.
Then maybe try find a sigma turbo manifold which has the exact same ports (won't fit though as designed for a rwd car) and go to your local exhaust place and get some custom extractors made up.... 500$ (v6's you have to take out the lhs driveshaft so it's subsequently more expensive to get extractors).
The intercooler piping will be a bit pricey but you don't have to polish it up, and that saves alot of money... also you can get mates in the industry (boat builder or something that polishes steel etc) to do it for you.
Also i'd try get a 2nd hand emanage to keep costs down...
For further info try search.
I wouldn't be upgrading camshafts as turbo will practically double your power (similar to what i have now, and that'll have you satisfied for a while). Also the lumpy cam needed to gain much power would put more stress on an old motor and the power curve would be too top end heavy, ie less driveable... Stock injectors and pretty large so i believe they could probably run 6-8psi... for you to find out though...

dude, sohc v6's are slow and have about 120hp atw, putting a v6 in your current car would be similar price to turbo your current car and then there's eng certificate etc, which is ****ing pricey.
Or you could turbo for not too much more 4$ish for about 160-170hp a 1/4 mile time of about 14.5, i consider that fastish now...

You'll need an engineers certificate for a turbo as well.
Though i do agree that without replacing the motor, turbo is the way to go. If you do all the work yourself however, you could find that you might end up paying just as much for a DOHC v6.

I would drop in the V6, they are cheap enough from wreckers, I have seen them in ebay going cheap too, a few engine mounts and the computer from the same model, do the work yourself, I reckon you would come under 2k, and the v6 would be better to mod then the four cylinder.
Or just get extractors, cheap for the 2.6 model, a full cat back exhaust and a cold air induction. You would have money left over to port and polish and do the throttle body.

Considering engineering and all that stuff I can't see you getting much change out of 2k, wouldn't surprise me if you went over. I'd be looking around for a v6 to buy.
