hey Guys,
Well i installed my CD player using an adaptor, and running the ground to the chasis.
Well it worked for about an hour and then the deck blew its fuse. Now every time i go to plug the adaptor in it blows a fuse straight away. Even if the car has no keys in the ignition it blows....
Could it be the ground? I tried 2 points on the chasis but no luck...
cheers

Check there is no wires crossed or damaged, there could be uncoved wires rubbing together.

I have checked for crossed wires behind the console but found nothing...
At one stage when i put the Metal CD player surround back in the car it actually sparked, but it only happend once so i am now thinking there maybe something wrong with the ground.
There was a dodgey connection connected for a power arial which didnt actually work, so i cut this connection tapped all the ends up but still no luck...
Is it feesable that the car is not grounded properly?
Cheers

Could be that but in my experience bad ground will make it not work at all and power problems blow fuses?

you should always disconect the battery when doing installs but well i dont but it makes sense are you using good fuses or cheap ones? is it the stereo fuse blowing or the fuse bay ones?

mercho

the actual fuse at the back of the deck.... The fuses in the fuse bay are fine...I think they are ok fuses and i am not game to try stronger ones incase i blow the whole system...

no dont up the wattage on the stereo one at all not even the ones in the fuse box i did have a bad experience with cheap fuses once

but if you are blowing the fuse in the stereo there might be a problem with the head unit or open wires rubbing on metal what are you using to put the wires together?

Heatshrink and electrical tape....i have checke all the wires at the back of the loom and they are fine...

And regarding the fuses, i have tried a pack of 5 from one place and two random ones from another servo that cost $1 each lol

Might be the head unit then im not sure?

Hmmm, ill try some different ground points and different fuses, and then maybe look into a different head deck, it just seems really strange...
Thanks for the help anyway, ill do some more looking aswell for exposed wires

i prefer to use bullets in the stereo department easy to pull out the stereo and dont come apart easy by them selves and they are plastic covered saves stuffing aroun with tape.

If its only blowing a fuse in the deck and not the car, is there a chance that its the deck thats dead?

this may sound stupid, but do you have the correct rating fuse? Could it be too low?

Other than that, what brand/model is the deck? Perhaps u need to get it checked out. Shorted wires on ur car will also blow fuses in ur car, and seeing as tho its the fuse on the back of the deck that blows, it suggests its the deck's problem.

Hey, in Artarmon (Near chatswood)....any help would be appreciated, i would even drive to surrounding areas...
Just went and put the stock deck in and it asked for the security code, so that leaves me thinking its the ground point or the actuall deck!

Run a new ground. My old TP did this and it is because the standard ground was pathetic.

yeh, i have it grounded to a bolt directly on the chasis, but i will try a new point this arvo...

security code is because it has had the power disconected. if you think it is still the ground attach some thicker wire to the ground and make sure it is attached to bare metal. sand it back a little with a piece of sand paper? if that doesnt make a difference try another deck im in newcastle i cant look @ it for ya.

ah ok, yeh but the actual old tape deck was getting power and allowing me to enter a security code, which says its not the wiring inside the car thank god...
Will try a different ground point and see how i go, thanks for the offer anyway :D

have you tried puttin it back in the car you got it from to see if it still works in there cause it could just be a faulty deck?

mercho
25-09-2006, 12:38 PM
nah the car i got it from is goone, i sold it...will do some fiddling this arvo and see what happens!

mercho
25-09-2006, 02:51 PM
ok just found out what the cause is...the chassis isnt grounded. Evrytime i put the grounding wire on any metal point i get a spark...is there a wire that i can splice into?

hey. if that doesnt work try using slow blow fuses.

mercho
25-09-2006, 03:11 PM
ok just talked to an auto elec, the sparking is a good thing means it is grounded lol...he thinks it may be something else, am taking it to him tommorrow...
Slow blow fuses? could they damage the deck?

So much rooting around!

Just rip the sucker out of the dash and hook up the power and accessory wires together to a known good 12 volt source (ie the battery terminal) and run the groung wire directly to the neagtive terminal, this way you rule out the deck or the wiring in the dash (if it works okay and powers up outside the car,you can bet some cowboy has frigged with the wiring and stuffed it (behind the dash)

On the slightest chance (and im giggling inside), this is not a positive grounded vehicle is it?:D
