Now that I've got your attention... I've painted my console silver!

Yes, I know it's been done to death but... it looks fantastic! And so easy, 100% DIY for a brilliant result! Cost me $50 all up, using good quality paint (not that Aussie Export crap).

I used Bain's console removal tutorial (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/mitsu/console/stereoremoval.htm) (very useful) to get it all apart. Gave everything a wipe with Wax/Grease Remover (Supercheap, $15), followed by about three coats of Touch Up Paint Plastic Primer ($17), allowing 20min between coats. Let it all dry for about 2 hours and gave it a quick sand with 400 then 1200 grit. Then came the Touch Up Paint - Metallic Silver ($17 again), did 2 very light coats of this followed by a couple heavier coats, again allowing about 20mins between coats.

Then put everything back together - let me tell you, it was a lot harder to get back together than it was to pull apart...

Also replaced my foglight covers (thanks to Meh) (the old ones had gaping holes in them where the previous owner installed some non-factory driving lights) and sprayed them silver to match my grille.

So this is my first mod for my car. What do you guys think?

Looking good mate! I like the contrast that your dials have with the silver, snappy!

Man that looks nice!
Was it hard to get the dash around the gauges out?

Thanks for the positive feedback..

lol Yeah, the photos are a bit, erm, poor - a combination of a not-to-flash camera and my inability to hold it steady....

Nah, it was really straightforward. Two screws at the top and two clips at the bottom hold the outermost piece in, then its just a matter of another 2 screws for the clear window piece and another 4 for the main piece and then everything just pulls out.

Looks good, get a new camera though.

They look sooo much better when you prepare them though as you can see by yours, properly prepared, good job.

Nice work. Looks like a good paint job.

The 3 LEDS mounted into the PNDL23 cheapens the effect though. Maybe some sort of clear strip with LEDs behind it would look classier.

lol nice thread mine... The console is actually quite different now.

I sprayed the cup holders, ashtray, cigarette lighter section, and coin tray black (so it looks just like the VRX or TL/TW console).

I also changed the shift light setup a couple days ago - scarily to something just like Mulga just suggested .. I got the auto facia and have placed the three LEDs behind a translucent plastic sheet..! Looks much better now, and the shift lights are much subtler - you wouldn't know they're there until they light up.

Missbishi- it's an air freshener thing, i moved it so its hanging from the glovebox, it was damn annoying swinging around from there..
