View Full Version : Intake resonator mod

Ok, did the old intake resonator mod on the Verada, just used ordinary juice lids.
Also removed the funnel thing on the front of the intake.
Result, sounds mighty impressive under WOT, almost has a V8ishness noise about it.
Its definetely given it some more poke, which I was'nt expecting.
So yeah for 30mins work it's a nice improvement on the ole Verada.
What is really weird is I did it on my TE as well after I did it to the Verada thinking it would make the same improvement, made absolutely NO difference at all, so dissapointed there.

Probably becuase of the cannon you got on the end...
for a stock V6 2nd gen the sound is amazing....honestly sounds like a V8 when the revs are rising

I did this mod a few weeks ago. The car isnt louder (mind you I dont have stock exhaust) but above 3k rpm it doesnt sound as harsh as it used to, more of a deep note now.

Doesn't do anything for performance, but does make a stock system sound beefy. I put them back on when i put my high-flow muffler on because it droned something shocking and ruined the nice note my new muffler produced.

Speaking to a few people who "know" what they are talking about, removing the resonators can actually harm the performance of the engine. How much is probably negligible.
See this post:

Didnt stop me removing them though :)

Okay, so I finally got around to doing this mod. Thought I'd give it a go seeing as it was so easily reversed.
Went out and bought two small and two large McCormick spice jars (couldn't remember which ones I needed and didn't have my car).
Anyway, I ended up using the two larger jar lids. They went over the inlet pipes instead of inside them - no chance of mine being sucked in.
They are a good fit around the outside and I added a set of new clips to clamp them in place just to make sure they go nowhere.
As for performance - no noticeable loss or gain.
As for sound - no noticeable change :doubt: (I think my exhaust is just too loud to notice any engine difference :bowrofl:)
I'll leave it as is for a while - may put the resonators back on one day, not sure.

Nice before and after Puck.....Thats a good image to explain to others what it is/where it is.
Honestly, the mod only makes a difference if your car is BOG STOCK, no mufflers no NOTHING

nice job, but I'm wondering why you didn't use the clips that were holding the resonators on instead of using new ones?

I did it to the MRS KR and doesnt make any difference. Perhaps I need to remove the "cone part on the front of the intake", wherever the hell that is, Ill have to take a look.

It does make a difference.
If you floor the car, at around 4,000rpm, the 6cyl will produce a deeper, more beefier noise.
These were recorded from inside my car on the Anzac bridge with the intake resonator mod

Used new clips because the old/original ones weren't big enough to go over the lids. Also, they were the 'twin wire' type (see pic with toolbox) and I thought they may break the plastic lids. Nice new clips always look better anyway. lol

I just put some new clamps in too.....makes it look a fraction better (To my eyes anyway, those wirey ones look so cheap)

You got the stock resonators on it? If so, it will work, just take them off and stick the spice lids where the resonators were and tighten the clamps, presto!

I'm not sure what you mean by "work", but yes you can do it. I wouldn't though, it'll make your exhaust sound like crap. This mod is good if you've got a stock exhaust.

did mine today the only thing i seem to notice is the exhaust note is deeper. power wise i dunno didn't feel much difference but i am running lpgas
You should all go and order an 3000GT/Dodge Stealth/Diamante 3L N/A "cai". Comes with oval pod, brakets and even the intake pipe is chrome - no more spice lids!
Here's a non-ebay one.

Yeah i know.. the injen kit comes with an oval pod but for some reason the site was being a bumbumhead to me and wouldn't let me search. That pic is off ebay. I did email injen about it a few months ago and they said yes that it does come with an oval pod, and the pod is blue! I would've gone that but i've got my own cai idea that will probably never make it past the fantasy stage. :(

Yeah, I've been thinking about one of these.
A while back a US ebay guy had one that was in anodised blue rather than the chrome.
But he's gone now :doubt:
Waiting to see if he lists again one day.
Postage is a bit tho from the US.

well as im new on here!! ive just given this mod a go... and im not sure if its cos i usually drive like a grandpa (and i was purposfully driving harder) but i have noticed a change in the sound for sure! but my TS is as stock as it gets when it comes to performance of any sort... lol
loss or gains in power etc... def no loss... as for gain... i personally think the car is reving out a little higher at take off and changing from 3rd to 4th easily at 80... where as before it was quite happy to slip through at 60 and chug up to 80! OFCOURSE... as i said before I was driving the car a little harder... but from pervious experience of my "un-grandpalike driving" theres def a sound diff, I wouldnt go as far as saying "V8ish"... before the magna I had a 318 fireball for 6 years... very different! but its a nice sound!
I think ill keep the mod on  thanks!!! oh and i used Mckormicks P****ly lids, nice one... any one want p****ly?? lol

my wheels where spinning in the wet today taking off at the lights... doesnt usually happen in the wet! maybe my tyres are a bit more worn out from when it last rained lol im sure its not all mental that its reving out more though... but ive only had the magna for a couple of monthes... and dont usually drive it as hard! either way, like liverpool put it "a bit of fun" and ... leftover herbs on toast for the next 12 weeks!!

hey guys, ive got what you want; ive got what you need ahaha
i did this ages ago, absolutely no difference, good or bad, on my 2nd gen 6g72. I only did it because i hate engine bay clutter. I found the lids of my missus thyroid pills fit better then the stock resonator bozes, and the lids are nice and wide enough to use the stock clamps on to make sure there is no leak.
I can supply these lids at will, i have dozens laying around haha thats if your sad enough. Ill go a blank alloy pipe once the new engines in.

I've just done this mod to my TL, which only has one resonator on the top side of the intake elbow. Gotta say, there is very little sound difference, if at all. I used a pvc tube-end & hose clamp to plug the hole.
Will have to switch back and forth a couple of times to see if there is any difference.
