Ok all thought i would share this with you. Recently someone posted a thread about air fuel ratio meters etc etc. So i deided to get one made up comes in a kit from Jaycar. Anyway to cut a long story short the unit was built and i installed it into my Verada. Now to the good bit. To my suprise the meter wasnt reading correctly i thought ok probably the meter checked with my mate who built it tested it all ok. Did some more investigating had a copy of the service manual looked up the 02 sensor checked the wiring etc then performed some diagnostics on the 02 sensor following the service manual.
Established that the sensor was stuffed. Heater within sensor was gone as well as the signal it was sending to the Ecu was eratic and inconsistant sometimes wasnt getting a reading at all. Replaced the 02 sensor today 60 bucks installed mechanic friend of mine. First thing i noticed on the way home the vehicles trip meter avreage fuel reading started dropping. I used to hover around the 12.5 to 13.0 mark now its in the mid 10's progress so far all is good and the Air Ratio meter is registering 14.7 on cruise which is correct.
Now to the timming mod for the people 3.5 engine as some of you know there is a fellow on one of the forums who has a kit availiable. Yes it ups the timming but it does lean out your mixtures does make the car go better. Very noticible difference on the meter. Be careful with this one if you go down this path you can easily go really lean and do some damage. In turn if setup correctly fuel consumption should get better. Will give you another update in a couple of weeks to let you all know how its going.
Best advice i can give everyone if you think your car is heavy on the juice and should be bette,r pull down a copy of the service manual grab a multimeter and check your 02 sensor. May save you some pennys in the long run. Only takes about 15-30mins depending on how good your are with your hands. On a side note even though the sensor was stuffed no codes or engine light activity was registered.

60 bucks is pretty cheap for an O2 sensor. NTK mitsu magna specific is $150 retail and a generic NTK which you have to solder the old plug on is $90. I've been meaning to check my O2 sensor since it's had a traumatic experience with an Exhaust shop but haven't got around to it. My average fuel consumption is around 12L/100km mainly city driving.
