Smell of fuel sounds like the computer may be way out and is flooding the engine, or could be a faulty choke. But with the age of the car it could also be a blocked Catalytic converter stopping exhaust flow. Time for a mechanic either way.

What are the symptoms. Is it doughy or does it buck around spluttering?
Check your timing.
Make sure you have your leads on in the right order.

Could be a number of things...
Check your ignition timing for a start. If ok, then>
Make sure your air filter isn't blocked. If ok, then>
Also check the level and condition of your transmission fluid. If ok, then>
Drain and refil fuel tank with fresh fuel. If ok, then>
Replace fuel filter.
Does the engine surge or miss at all during heavy accelleration?
Strong smell of fuel may mean the car isn't firing on one of the cylinders.

ur vacume diaphram that opens your secondaries might have died
I'd check your transmission fluid levels too. really low levels can have really bad symptoms sometimes.
loss of vacuum is also a good one to check, as mentioned. you can lose your secondaries in the carby and if you lose your vacuum advance too it will be really sloooooow and gutless.
a coupla times in my sigma a vacuum hose popped off. quickly fixed.
hopefully it's a cheap solution - i'd hate it to be loss of compression.
