they arent too expensive, and apparantly last around 100,000ks..

couldnt hurt to replace if you think you are getting bad economy

It'd be worth doing, your car might be running a bit rich.

I haven't ever thought of replacing mine, but I get 575 ks out of a tank in my 2.6 right now so I'm not touching anything!

If you're gonna replace your O2 sensor, just go get an aftermarket one from Repco. Will be half the price of Mitsubishi. I recently replaced one on an Astron 2.6L at about $75 beans. They arent cheap parts to make sure its busted before you go forkin out the dosh.
There's a procedure to test it somewhere in the service manual but I can't find the friggen page.
Do you have a copy of the service manual? Just do a search for it on this forum. Theres a link that you can download it in another thread somewhere.

OK! I found the page!!!

This is how you check the O2 Sensor (single wire type - which I think is the most common. I've never seen any other type although the manual has a 4 wire procedure as well)

1) Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
2) Connect a voltmeter to the back of the sensor connector.
3) Start the engine and increase the engine speed to 2,500rpm. The voltmeter should fluctuate between 0V and 1V approximately 7 or 8 times in 10 seconds.
4) Replace the oxygen sensor if faulty.

Good luck!

I have it right here:
575 k from 57.88 litres of fuel. The fuel warning light came on at about 570k. Soon after I found a Caltex and filled up. For the last four months I've only been using Caltex Vortex 95ron premium.

I always fill the tank, record how many ks I've done and then reset the trip meter. I get the litres I just put in off the reciept and then do the calculation: Fuel/ks x 100 for litres per hundred ks. This time it worked out at 10.08 litres per 100 ks.

Not so good this week. Went up to 10.3. On regular unleaded I used to get between 11.1 and 11.6, exactly the same as when I boutht the car nine years ago. I think it works out a dollar or so cheaper to use premium over regular so its a bargain and the car does go better.

I drive a mix of highway/city each week but the traffic is heavy and often slow on the highway part (Gateway road in Brisbane). My daily commute is 100k so I get through almost a whole tank in a week of travelling to work. I am a gentle driver and I try to keep the revs below 2500 at all times. I also think the 2.6 engine sucks hard on the juice if you drive over 100kph so I set that as my top speed in normal driving (about 2300prm). The car is a wagon and I have a tow bar and roof racks (frequently with a sailbaord on top) so I have some extra drag and weight to haul around. I think I'm doing prety well.

Wow, you are doing pretty well! thats a great figure for a 2nd gen to be doing.
If the tank is 60L and your putting in 57L...how do you know you only have 3L left:P
Still though thats a pretty awesome figure to be getting specially from an astron.

im sorry but how can you get almost 600 km to a tank, i barely get 400, 420 MAX, do you drive 10km under the speed limit or something?

I think it might depend on his driving style aswell, I drive a 3rd Gen and usually get only 450-500 until the petrol light comes on, but last week I was poor so I drive like a granny, and didnt accelerate when I didnt need to and I made 598 before I didnt trust it anymore.

EDIT: This included towing a loaded trailer ~50km (albeit at 80km/h in 100 zone)

I think this is the right explanation. Call me a granny footer if you like, but it is saving me money and prolonging the life of the car.

I have always got fuel economy within the range of published figure for the 2.6 TRs (11.5 lp100k city on regular) and it has never varied over the life of the car. I'm only getting better economy now because I'm using premium.

I am easy on the car and that has also contributed to it lasting so well with almost no mechanical failures (I only just replaced drive shafts at 225k) and a still healthy auto transmission. (I do need timing chains however)

The 2.6 is not an enthusiast's car and I have little interest in driving fast. I get my speed kick from windsurfing. I'm happy that it's so reliable, fits all my windsurfing gear, tows my sailing boat, is quiet and currently costs me peanuts to run. I can't think of a better car for me. She'll be hard to replace.

word; heres a great example, new engine more power i flogged it for the first few tanks and got 350k's for each one... i then reached 550km's on the next one with some flogging and the rest gentle. 2nd eg had more highway too... i never usually go on the highway except for short trips.

Drive granny like if you're poor.

the weekend before last i got 520km outa a full tank and i can tell you that the whole time i was drivin at least 110km/h on the highway, floggin it around town, and took it hard through windy road through the mountains, also had it sitting on 140km/h for a good 10 mins or so, it very rarely saw under 3000rpm, i was very impressed especially considering its a V6

Right on TR 300000, i used to get anywhere between 350-500kms from 60L for my TR 2.6, had a busted o2 sensor so maybe could have gotten even better. Totally depends on driving style.

I just cant help but accelerate hard, and so I suffer badly. Last fill was 250ks off 40L, about 400ks from all 64L and 16L/100km. Not overly great. The best I've had was from 80% freeway driving (100-110km/h) and I did 335ks from 30L. Normal driving best is 450 from 60L.

my trip meter is currently sitting at about 425 and the petrol needle is just under 1/8th of a tank, thats with me driving like a granny till 1/4 tank, keeping revs under 2500 when accelerating, at 1/4 i thought stuff it and the revs went up to 3000. a lot of these k's were also on the highway over the weekend. so im my opinion, i do need an O2 sensor, although i dont have a multimeter to test the one thats in there now, but my plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor are pretty new, so i dont think its them. although my plugs are a stage cooler than standard, would this have something to do with it?

What kind of petrol are you using. I only started getting good figures when I switched to premium.

Also, it looks like I'm not going so good this week. probably going to get 540 max. I think fuel quality varies.
