Hi, I'm new on here.
I have a 97 TF Magna Excutive. I brought this about 18 months ago. I have put 17" mags on lower it but other then that it is standard. I never had to do anthing myself to it as my husband use to do it. But now he is not with me, I need some help as I'm not asking him for help (Pride). My gear box is playing up when I drive along it cloks and the neatural light on the dash flashes. I know I need to change the tansmission fluid But that is where the problem is. I rang to shops the find prices for the automatic tranmission fluid and one place told me it was $30 for 4 liters can't remember name and I need a filter the other told me to use TQMST and it $51.00 for 4 liters and I don't need a Filter. This is why I need your help and I not taking it to a mechinic. As I think I can do it myself. So can someone help me :bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

I think you need a mechanic.

If the neutral light flashes on the dash then the car has registered a serious problem with the automatic transmission (ie it may be/about to be stuffed) and hopefully has recorded an error code. In fact I'd say the car is in limp home mode right now.

Consult the owners manual as it should list out what the number of flashes of the neutral light should mean (it should be flashing in phases)

Standad change, take off the gearbox sump, dispose of the fluid, replace filter and gasket (you should always replace the filter and the gasket, you can buy a little kit), then just replace the fluid, it should say how much and to what specifications the oil should be in your owners manual.

EDIT: just read the neutral light thing, take it to your mitsu dealer or somewhere that specialises in Auto transmissions.

Your TF uses a spin-on filter just below your air filter housing.

You should expect to pay ~$30 for the filter from mitsu, ~$20 from repco.

The fluid you want is Mitsu SP3 fluid, usually around $30-40 for a 5L bottle, you will need just over one of these, so usually a 5L and a 1L will do the job.

Where are you located? If you are anywhere near me I'll do it for you.

Flashing dash lights should be setting off alarm bells in your head (Other than your indicatorslol ). Your Tranny could be very sick. Dealer or Auto Tranny specialist should be your next magna outing.

Mitsu SP3 auto gearbox fluid is $30 for 5L from dealer.

You'd need about 10L for a decent flush. This might just mask a deeper problem. Check the colour of the fluid. If it is dark brown or black and doesn't smell sweet (It's burnt and you definently got a problem)

Sorry I am in queensland, I acually live in Townsville. I will change the oil and give it a service and see what happens. Until then she is in the garage. Thanks for the help guys but I still don't know much more then I already know. I don't have a owners manual. My X took it with all my papers for my mags and well as the thing (socket) to take my lock nuts off my mags. It doesn't happen all the time when I drive it. Just some times . This just adds to the rest of the bad luck I have been having.

Tam,

The car has logged a fault with the transmission. It will probably blow the gear box if you don't get it looked in to. Mitsubishi's have very tempermental automatic gearboxes.

Get a replacement socket or get the locknuts off your wheels BEFORE YOU GET A FLAT!

just read my manual for my tj(the warnings should be the same). if the light is flashing twice per second while in D, the trany fluid is overheating. if it flashes once per second, puting it nicely, the trany is ****ED!!!, and you don't want that, trust me, been there done that( 2500 lighter in the pocket)

Trust me she not going anywhere until I do the oil and Then I will take it for a drive and see what happens. If the gear box is going to blow it will and not much more I can do about that. It flashes twice per second. It has done this the last 2 time I drove it so I took it slow coming home (both time was close to home) and now I haven't drove it. But my X husband borowed it once before that could he have trashed it.

Well I bit the bullet and I have a mechnic going to look at it. He is in the army so he is
going to take it to work next weekend and give it a full service. And all it going to cost me is parts and a carton. Thanks to my sister for living next door to him.
Thanks to all for all the help. :)

I’m sorry Tam,

QLD boys have no manners.
I was going to suggest id come around and take a look at it for you. But I’m unfortunately in NSW. Is Chivalry really dead?

Hope it all gets fixed for you, without costing an arm and a leg.

Let me know how it goes.

Well thanks for the offer. I am a bit far away. I was going to do it myself. But I just not that sure on gear boxes. I can actually do everything else. But seeing the gearbox has to be check I figured I will get it completley serviced.

Hey, as I said I am new to this club.
Anyway my car goes see a mechnic in a week. So its algood unless it cost me a fortune then I will not be impressed. By the way i got my socket back for the lock nuts. Its amazing what happens when you have something that someone else wants.
Update you all on Saturday to tell you how much my bank account is lighter.

Hey Tam.

I'm also new, and live in the same area (townsville), but I unfortunately would have been probably responsible for destroying something rather then fixing it.

I'm a big supporter of concussive maintenance :D :bowrofl: :D

But I cam help ya if ya really want me to.

I got my car fixed. I got the transmission fluid change and he said something out cleaning it all out, I don't know I was just excited that I didn't have to buy a new gearbox, but I was really worried. It cost a total of $150 that included buying the transmission fluid and filter.
Thanks for all of your help.

Great, Like it use to be. I was talking to the friend that did it for me, and he said the transmission fluid was bad. I have only owed the car for about 16mths and I think I have put about 30 000k on the clock. My friend didn't have time to do the service so i will get that done in about 2 weeks. It's less hassel for me just to pay him to do it and he gives it a good going over and he is real pickey so the smallest thing he fixes. So I am real happy.
