hey all
just got a second roadworthy, and the place is asking 930 for all the repairs they reckon it needs!!
bitta background here: when i was home (hamilton vic) i tried to get roadworthy done. was and old bloke who found
abs light stays on *edit*(i meant to say SRS, as in airbags. silly)
broken cat rubber mount thing
seat belt bolt loose (fixed myself)
rear plate lights not working (replaced myself)
so now im back in melbourne at uni, so i thought instead of having to drive home(3.5hrs each way) ill get an inspection here (waverley tyre and brake centre). and this is what these guys found (i pulled the abs light out cos i thought i only had til monday to get it fixed... definately gonna get it fixed soon):
prices quoted in brackets
windscreen (185)
wiper blades (12)
brake fluid (45)
exhaust hanger(15) the cat thing
2 rear tyres (300)
front engine mount(210)
front rocker cover (90)
now i cant help but think this guy is ripping me off, cos the wiper blades weren't even lifted off the car, the windscreen is all but perfect, and no problems have been noted with the brakes. and also that i have had a prepurchase inspection by quite possibly the most anal guy ive ever heard of, and the previous inspection, and most of these things werent even found.
so i guess my choices are do i get this guy to fix all the crap that i cant (and cant find better quote for) or do i take it to mitsubishi, get them to fix abs (who knows how much but i gotta do it anyway) then drive home spending 70$ or so of petrol to get the other guy to fix it.
or, does any1 know somewhere in melb that does these things cheap that i can just try and go there (rwc's) ? so far i have paid 88 and 77 dollars respectively which im told is a bit over priced.
any kind of reply is appreciated.
cheers

ps also i realise that the list 2nd guy gave doesnt add up to 930, figure its including labour. or maybe he just is dodgy.

UMM put simple:
wiper blades (12)
brake fluid (45)
exhaust hanger(15) the cat thing
All cheap do too yourself.
2 rear tyres can be done cheaper at a tyre joint.
actually most can be done yourself for half the price, however the bigger jobs let them do remember parts +labour - labour is the killer.

If you believe that the car is ok and they are just bsing you, take it to somewhere else and get a second opinion. There'd be hundreds of mechanics around that can do a roadworthy.

well after having an hour or so to think about it, in a thermodynamics tute of all places, i reckon this is what ill do.
go to mitsubishi tomorrow(hopefully) get SRS problem fixed. then ill head home next week sometime i can fit it around classes i have to attend, and hope that the guy there wont charge me extra to relook at it.
and just forget to tell him i tried to have a new one done here.....
ugh what a kick in the teeth!! it sure sets me back a bit with plans for the car...

You know your own car ...
If need ... be take the globe out, move on and get another report. Don't wear the $930.
Do a few things your self slowly.
Hope this helps.

well i only got it a week ago ,so i dont know it amazingly well. right now im tryin to get the roadworthy so i can register in vic wise. personally, i dont think that any of the stuff 2nd guy mentioned deserves fixing, except tyres and SRS which needs to be done for safetys sake, i replaced the windscreen wipers today. booked in for SRS service tomorrow, hope it goes alright so i can get RWC done at home.
thanks for the replies

what we're saying is maybe they don't need fixing and he's just using them as an excuse to make money? I know of a few RWC places that have done this in the past. I'd be getting a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion.

yeah i definately think he is, so therefore not going back there. gonna sacrifice the 70 or wateva it is for fuel home, and just get the guy back there to approve it and hopefully not charge me again.
gotta ring him soon to find out.
oh yeah cars at mitsubishi rite now, there gonna get back to me at 4ish. and lets hope its not gonna cost too much to get the SRS problem fixed.
it was pretty funny, i forgot to put the bulb back in, so when i told the service dude he looked suprised i guess that i could pull it out,
anyway, will keep y'all posted

sorry to say but anything mitsubishi do is expensive and full-max-price

and where else do you go to fix airbags?

probably at mitsubishi, dosent mean their price is competitive. Its a joke. But its how they make a profit.
And I beleive its the light, not the actual airbag that needs fixing 'in this thread anyway'

yeah i know its gonna cost heaps, quoted 44 when i was there just for the diagnostic there gonna run.
but i guess its not a huge price to pay if it saves u in a crash.
and i hope its just the light too, cos thatd be a lot cheaper!
they're gonna ring me ~4 today

Ahh I see where you're coming from.
The light illuminating means its stored an error code. It could be indicating that the airbag electrical connector was disconnected previously to some more serious like a busted control module.

just a question, what's a clock spring and what does it do?

I've also got a spare Verada ei clock spring that I wouldn't mind getting rid of. (Airbag/cruise control)

it connects electrical stuff in your steering wheel to the electrics in your steering column whilst still allowing it to turn without breaking contact. Just a long coil of springy wire...

um its from chadstone mitsubishi. so do you think that i am getting royally ripped off with the prices quoted? i mean replaciing the whole SRS computer sounds a bit rich, especially since its probly just the spring. is there some way i can check to see what error codes the ecu is storing? i remeber reading it once but after searching cant find it.
so these springs you are talking about, are they easy to install? or would it be a mitsu job? and will they fit in my car ie are they generic?
thanks for the help so far

its possible the comp is stuffed but chadstone mitsu are a bunch of a$#@ wipes. the wheel needs to come off to replace the spring, get another dealer to reset it takes like 30sec some dealers do it free f u rock up and there not busy.

not impossible nor brain surgery.
But you'd want to think twice about mucking about with airbags as the wiring etc is pretty important... hmm... yeah maybe it IS brain surgery.

Mitsu parts desk?

like magnete says there is always the danger of blowing up the air bag and u might need a sterring wheel puller to get the wheel off.

This happened with my KE. Same type of BS too, like a windscreen u needed a microscope to find "chips".
Took it to someone reasonable and they passed it straight away.
Give the engine a wash before u get it inspected.
