View Full Version : Another mystery- Engine Light
Sorry for the never ending questions guys, but I really don't know what on earth is going on with the car.
Engine light sometimes TURN on WHILE driving. This had fooled me to immediately pull over and check engine oil... But the funny thing is there are OILS inside the motor! Its close to F. When the lights are on the car idles HIGH. Since then, I've always been paranoid and I carry a large bottle of engine oil in my boot just in case.
Can anyone explain why this is happening?

Hi.
When the "engine" light comes on while driving, it means the computer has
detected a fault in one of the sensors. It's got nothing to do with the engine
itself - ie, low oil level. If you have a problem with low oil pressure, the oil
pressure light will come on, not the engine light.
A gearbox fault can also cause the light to come on, and if the fault is serious
enough the car will go into limp mode. Doesn't sound like your problem though.
When the engine light comes on, an error code is stored in the computer. Often
called ECU codes. These can be retrieved (with a LED test light) and the source
of the error identified.
There are lots of threads on this subject.
I'd suggest checking out easy things first. Undo the electrical connectors on
on the throttle body and check them for corrosion. Common problem. Also the
connector to the MAF - an air flow sensor between the air filter and throttle
body. Clean off any green gunge (carefully) - I use an old toothbrush and
a can of Contact Cleaner.
With the increase in idle, suspects would be the throttle position switch or idle
control motor (both on the throttle body). There are threads here explaining how
to adjust/test these with a multimeter. There are other possible causes though.
If you don't have the know-how, tools or confidence to do any of the above,
Mitsubishi can easily tell you why the engine light is coming on. A five minute
test with their hand-held computer gizmo...shouldn't cost you much to find out.
The light coming on doesn't mean your engine has a problem. This happened to
me just recently and the error code said throttle position switch. While checking
it out I noticed the idle speed control motor wasn't working at all...changed the
ISC and adjusted the TPS, cleaned the throttle body and its all good now.
Let us know how you go!

:stoopid:.
But just on the whole limp mode subject, pretty sure the neutral light flashes on the dash when in limp mode.
Check engine light just means a sensor isn't giving a reading that the ECU will accept as normal. You can get the test light or you can take it to your local mistubishi and they can tell you what it is, sometimes for free depending on how nice the dealer is.

If it idles high while the engine light is on there a fair chance the coolant temp sensor is dicky and the engines' reverting back to cold start mode hence the idle, but yeah as people have said, you need to or need someone else to check your diagnostics port fault codes to work out whats causing it. Having said that I drove my little 89 pulsar with intermittant engine lights for 2 years :P

Thanks guys! Didn't know there was so much problem with the engine light comming on!
You guys are great, I'll give all those a try!
