View Full Version : Post your ride height

driver
21-12-2003, 08:11 PM
The aim of this thread to compare the ACTUAL ride height differences between our cars. This should help clear up any confusion about people saying they have X springs, but Y ride height, along with the differences in spring settling, etc etc.

INSTRUCTIONS:
0. Park your Magna on a hard flat level surface, with the stearing straight.
1. Get your Tape measure. Empty passengers, other non-day-2-day stuff from boot. Keep your stereo system/subs in there, as this effects day to day height, which is what we are all interested in.
2. Measure between the GROUND and the TOP CENTER of the FRONT wheel arch openning.
3. Measure between the GROUND and the TOP CENTER of the REAR wheel arch openning.
(Measure to the bottom of the wheel arch, not to the top of the inside of the wheel well.) OR as Redev put it: "basically where the the guard folds in"

If you have wheelarch flares, please say so!, as this will effect your results :)

Post your results by filling the blanks:

i think we should be measuring from the ground to the floorpan, as different models might have slightly different wheelarches.

:!:

Had thought about this, but wheelarches are much easier to measure without confusion, since the floorpan varies in hieght.

Also, I don't know about you guys, but I'm only interested in comparing my car against other magna's within the same generation series. So just don't compare across generations. The most interesting data will be the same setup on the same/similar models anyway :)

This data is coming along good.

I've compiled an Excel spreadsheet which will make comparing easier. Let me know if there's any mistakes in it. :)
http://members.iinet.net.au/~bdriver/magnalowering.xls

Just one quirk though - PLEASE measure the car on a hard flat surface, and with the stearing straight as well. If you change your numbers, let me know (or post below) and I'll update the excel file.

I told you guys before that MMAL say that they have a +/- 20mm out of the factory...
This is why I said that you should compare the stock heights to yours PRIOR to order your shocks... since you may want a desired height but find that the shocks you ordered do go as low as you wanted as your car was a +20mm one... or you find it is tooo damn low since yours was a -20mm one...

Oh and the post is here if anyone cares to re-read it..

It seems most ppl here have had their car lowered.... about 40 - 50 mm from standard. I am just wondering on costs.... how much for the springs and how much to have them fitted...... and how low can you go to stay legal.......

bLAdEbLA
29-12-2003, 09:08 AM
Mine is lowered 2.5" from std. I believe it cost me about $600 for a good set of springs, and then a couple grand for some racing shocks to keep those bumps at bay.

Then again, if you don't do downhill or anything like that, and you only drive around the city you can probably get away with just buying springs... but don't blame me when you original shocks and bushes crack from bottoming out, and your tyres are worn unevenly.

Madmagna
29-12-2003, 06:11 PM
The correct way to measure is from the bottom of the rim to the inderlip of the guard. Tyre pressure this way will not factor into the measurement.

driver
29-12-2003, 06:23 PM
Wouldn't rim size be more dramatically effecting it then? big rims, low profile rubber, verse small rim+fat 15" tyre?

Still this way gives a pretty good estimate of differences, but I guess we'll have to take the -/+(little bit) for tyre pressure in to consideration :)

TBuTcher

Thats not true!

It is from the hub centre to the underside of the lip.

If you read my origional post with the information from MMAL this is where they measure from .. .this is where the insurance companies measure from.
Haydn

Madmagna

Both are true!

Some companies like pedders give the spec from bottom of rim to guard lip, Mazda used to do the same. I am not sure about now.

There is no real accurate way to get from centre of hub as you will also have some sort of varience due to optical error that is of course you are able to get exact centre.
If you have 17" rims then the measurement will be out by 1 inch in all

It that case as long as you then maybe take off the radius of the rim then thats fine...
But being 1" out or more if you have a 15" - 17or 18" rim is alot comapred to 5-10mm...

SuFz

TBuTcher
29-12-2003, 08:58 PM
Nah thats not true... :)
I understand that there is going to be a problem finding the exact centre...
You also run the risk if your wheels have a centre that sticks out further than the hub....
so then you have the error of it not being vertically measured... instead it is measured on an angle.. thus adding a few more mm's..
The only way to be exact would be with some leveling system that stuck out from the underside of the arch and from the centre of the rim and then they were level and then measured virtically and perpendicular from these two horizontal levels...
But face it who is going to go to that length... (MMAL..?)
For general Day 2 Day I think either way is fine... main thing is that it is a constant.
If you are going to meausre from the ground to the underside of the arch.. then the problem of Rim diameter and tyre profile are entered into...
measureing from the bottom of the rim (or top.... ) to the arch or from the centre to arch would be better... HOWEVER... as long as everyone is measureing the same and putting down the extra details.. (like Rim diameter and tyre profile) then at least we are all be consistant..
nuff said.

mudflaps do not count, I will find the ADR rules when I have times, it is for a fixed body or mechanical part that the messurement is taken, the car has to be loaded which in the definition is a driver and a tank of fuel.
The Laws are 100,, and no more than 1/3 rd suspension travel reduced.
Mudflaps are not measured as they are concidered "flexable" however skirts, lips, exhaust and suspension does count.

Wouldn't it be best to measure the height from the bottom of the rim to the lowest point on the guard directly over the centreline of the wheel then subtract half of the rim diameter?

Would get a lowest to centre value then!

I have measured my car and my front seem to be way up there 735mm v 710mm average. I will be wasting that 30mm just to get down to you guys.

Rear is better though. Maybe there was something in the boot when I measured it.

It is always best to measure from centre of wheel to guard.
That way it does not matter what size rims you have it should always measure the same.
King springs measure it this way.
