as the title suggests..
i just made myself a custom short shifter last weekend..
was really easy actually!
basically shortened the existing one about 1 inch maybe a little more..which decreased the necessary throw to shift gears :)
looks real good.. and feels nice too... just gotta change the boot now.. and the knob..
ok updated with picture :)
btw the black smudge on the pic is where the shifter used to be...

So what's involved in the chop? Welding etc required?

pull the stick out, and cut a piece off in the middle, that way you are saving the threads, and weld the two pieces together, make sure that you mark it on both sides first before you cut it though so you dont twist the threads, to get the best threading possible aka as it is now - tight and pointing forward

well...
the shifter has a bend in it.. and i basically chopped the entire bend out..
marked it.. cut it with a grinder.. found a bolt that would fit inside both pieces for extra strength..
then twisted the shifter till it sat straight up and meshed nicely..
then welded her together again.. bout 30 mins worth of work... you could take it down further... however a good recommendation is to keep it about the hieght of your middle console piece.. that way its not too short..

been on there a good 6 months now and not even fading... no cracks or chips..
use acrylic in a spray can :) make sure u do a few layers.. and it PAYS to sand it down smooth !!!
it will reduce chance of cracking..
