since i bought my car, ive had a problem with the SRS light staying on continuously. i know this has been covered a bit before, but just couldnt find enough info.
basically, if any1 can tell me of their experience with this type of problem that would be great.

so far, i have taken my car to mitsubishi, but they want over $1100 to replace the SRS computer and the clock spring, so i thought id see what i can do myself.

i tried to take the steering wheel off today, but got foiled by the 6star nut on the side of it.
i managed to take all the surrounding panels and the column covers off though.
oh and i know of the chance of setting the airbag off, so i am being very wary. TecoDan sent me the workshop guide about it, so i knew to disconect the battery first
anyone know how to get the wheel off?

oh, and interestingly, i checked the ecu fault codes with the method on the FAQ, and it flashed continuously, which i now know to mean that there is no fault....but the light is still on!!

thanks for whatever help you can give

cheers, will

I had a SRS intermitent fault from the loom being loose. I would unplug and make sure it isnt corroded/seated properly.

which loom was that?

I dont actually know, just relaying what the service people said. I would assume though that behind the cigarette lighter/stereo where the ecu is the srs ecu is there too.

I had an SRS fault light come on at certain times...no pattern at all.

Took it for a service and found the driver side 'side' airbag was faulty...lucky it was under warranty so they replaced the whole side airbag unit.

the 2 star nuts have to come out they hold the airbag in. be careful not to round them cause then they need to be drilled out. once they are out then theres 1 big nut that holds the wheel to the collum.

Isn't it dangerous to take off a steering wheel that has an airbag? That's what i've been told anyway.

VERY DANGEROUS if u dont know what ur doing. but there not booby traps going to explode just like that, think about it ur sitting in front of it when driving.

Ive done a few wheels changing them to leather and and had to drill out studs cause someone's rounded them.

I don't know what i'm doing so i'm not going to attempt it lol. When i get my leather cover i'll just stitch with the wheel on the car :P.

That's what I did. Time consuming but well work it. Did you get a wheelskins cover?

Haven't actually purchased 1 yet but it's on the to-do list. If sewn tight they can look really good. Going for a red and black theme in the car now.

yeah i know about the dangers of it going off, but following the service manual am pretty certain/ willing to take the risk, that it wont go off. even if i stuff it, its not gonna be any worse off than it is now.

as for the star nuts, where dya get a star screwdriver?

and also, the service manual says to use a wheel puller to get the wheel off, is this necessary or just recommended

cheers

Any auto shops like repco, autobarn etc. should sell star screwdrivers. I have one that came in the set of ratchets i bought.
As for the wheel puller, you'll only need one if the wheel is on super tight. Have a go just using your muscles first :).

if the battery is disconnected, beats me why you would be scared to remove an airbag?!
use the correct torx bit, 2 bolts, and that's it.. undo the plug and remove the airbag. simple really!
if we are all willing to change a light bulb in a 240 volt home without a worry, why would people be scared to remove an airbag? i've removed hundreds of them, with the usual force, without a hiccup!
bar the bullsh!t stories you read in car magazines etc, i've never known of anyone have one let go on them while being removed!

Airbag computer has a bank of capacitors that store enough charge to trigger;
airbags cannot rely on 12V battery for ignition as lord knows everyone's battery is
located right behind the front headlight (right where the pole I ran into finished up!).

Capacitors will self-discharge if disconnected after a while... but dunno "how long".

Risk is not like changing a lightbulb, try opening the case to a tube TV or monitor.
There's some big capacitors in those things too... touch the wrong terminal/s
after waiting not-enough length of time after disconnecting from mains... = painful.

static can also set them off ...not realy something you would want to go off in your hand or face ..

best to get mitsu to do it as they can turn the system off with the mutII as far as i know

They can go off after the battery has been disconnected but that stored power does not stay their for long.
