I was told by the dealer that it is sealed :(

If its the black one with 3 buttons (red/green/ button) then the battery is a CR2032 IIRC. About $3 at DSE. You pry open the edges with a 5c coin.

Nothing is sealed if you use a big enough hammer :bowrofl:

I've replaced the batteries in the TF remotes and yeh.. they click back together.. except for one.. which his sticky taped back together!

No unfortunately is a one button remote.

Whats the point to spend another $50.00 when it is going to last less than a year?
Think I will need to smash it open before using my $50.00
Man can't believe this bull****ism on the remote.

Another question, anyone tried having a after market remote? Cheaper? and where to get them?

Thanks for the help guys.

I just had to buy another remote cos the battery died. I did pull it apart and the battery isnt made to be removed. But once you break it oper it wont go back together. Unless you tape it or glue it. Cost me $43 i think.

Not promising guys, I don't think is worth supporting the remote in this case. I got mine like just a year and expect me to buy another one again?

Think this is the first major blow about my Magna. This IS lousy design, apology from them is also not acceptable. is basically a rip off. No way of telling how long another remote will last.

Has anyone installed a after market alarm using different remote?

Guys....it's sad but true, the TE and TF remotes are both sealed units.....the first remote that was designed with a replacable battery was the TH......I have 2 TF remotes and when the battery dies in one, out will come the hammer and 2 pack epoxy.

So did you manage to change the battery unit? or you did not?

I dont think TL remote works on a TE? and I read the dumb manual again and it says is not servicable. :(

Total bummer.

Saw on Ebay key remote duplicator, not sure if this is worth a try.
Going to research on cheaper options than getting $50.00 every year.

Yeah the battery died in my TF remote, I tried for ages to get it open, using a hot air gun to remove the glue, prying it open with all manner of things and never could, had to cave in and buy the $63 replacment in the end

The one I had before that was half dead when i got hte car lasted about 2 years, had the current one for 8 months or so and its going fine.

But yeah I agree its a wank should be able to replace it grrr!

Carefull prying with a screwdriver and you can get it to open, but will need to glue it shut again. The battery that they use has little tangs that are soldered into the circuit board and would make it difficult to replace. I ended up buying a new one from my local dealer for $43. I then saw one go on e bay for $45 plus $7 freight!!

hmm...sounds like a dead end, anyone replace with a different alarm system for TE/TF?

The way I see it, why not upgrade the whole central locking will cost less then change it every time plus give car an alarm system.

your car is the exact same as mine, and you dont have factory central locking?i dont get it,i fort most third gens get central locking and the remote boot pop up thing on their remote?or maybe it was one of those things you had to pay extra, hmmm yes i think that would be the way to go mate,my old car i got an alarm system put in it,but no1 tried to nick it,so i faught there was no point wit my magna, but yes your idea sounds perfect go with that, let me know how ya go:)
central locking should be 150-170 bucks maybe
alarms anywhere between 150-300
dont forget magnas have imobilsers built in the remote,so no1 could nic your magna wit out getin under the dash and messin wit the wires,up 2 you if you want an alarm system, mind you i prob should have one wit the $$$ stereo i have:)

No the car has a central lock, however is my lousy remote that is probably gone.

I was told by my owner berfore that there are places selling remote that could set for the car. I probably will look into that.

Nexus,

I haven't cracked one open yet cos they are both still goers but I will when the time comes. I don't know if its true but I have been told that the batteries in the sealed units will last much longer......if I remember the speil from the dealer they said something in the order of 7-10 years before they die. If the story is not bull (and who could doubt a dealer), I have a little time to go before testing my surgical skills.

I did that when I had a TE got a battery with tabs from jaycar, not exactly the same battery then glued it all together. had to reprogram again and alls good!

all 3rd gen remotes before the red/green/white button units were sealed, meaning, NO battery replacement! sure, if you wanna break it open and glue it together, go for it!
for 50 odd bucks, it's cheap.. that's the going rate anyway for most genuine remotes regardless of manufacturer! if you can't afford that, get yourself a pushbike!

p.s: the remote is covered by a 12 month warranty, so for anyone saying it wont last 12 months, has no idea! if it fails in the 12 month period ( and not showing any signs of abuse ), mitsi will cover it under parts warranty

lol, remotes that cost that much that does not allow a battery replacement is a bad design.
12 months? hmm Lets see what about the 13th Month? Geezs too bad for me I guess.

Well problem is, I have no idea whether the remote is F up (probably is since people are saying it last 5 years.) Also stated in the manual.

I think my best thing to do now is get another original + get a remote key duplicator and use the duplicator instead. Not sure if the remote duplicator will work but I give it a try.

Bad luck for me I guess.

I hear you Rusty,

Sorry for those who think $50.00 is a cheap thing to pay, as my frustration on it is basically why such a design?

For those who are about to get even cheated, Some dealers (I wont mention which ones) demand your car to be booked in for the programming and says no onelse can do it. lol
(do a search on the threads for the write up)

So you end up paying like $70.00 being dumb. For a 1 minute job.

I manage to get my replacement. No not happy, as I think is poor quality.
The manual states it last up to 5 years (BS) probably 3 if you lucky.

I am now waiting for my key duplicator to see if I can code a spare. Will update the thread if it doesn't work.

Depending on the alarm system, a remote duplicator might not work as I know my TH 1999 is a rolling code (meaning each time you lock it and unlock it, the car send the remote a new code [hence why it looses its code time to time]) there by any code your duplicator takes on, may not be able to store it, I've got 3 remotes for my 3 cars at my house, and my duplicator wont memorise any of them due to rolling code.

Rolling code for dummies:
Rolling code means it sets a new code for the vehcile each time it is activated (ie pushing a button). This was designed to stop theft of vehicles by tapping into its alarm frequency and disabling it through a code generator.

Point is, don't go buy one unless you're sure it's going to work :)

No problems - the battery is easy to source - to reprogram it turn the key from ACC to ON 3 times (IIRC) the indicators will flash one. Now push the button on the remote (any button) and the indicators will flash to accept it. Get your next remote and do the same. After no more remotes (max 4) 5 seconds elapsed it goes back to normal mode.

Thanks heath young, forgot about reprogramming it hahaha

Kinda useless to have a remote with a battery that doesn't have a code to use!! :bowrofl:
