just wanted to know how to drain the t\converter?, im thinking its the same as the old TP, also whats the best oil for both engine and auto

my auto fluid is realy bad (burnt brown) so i want to make sure i get all of it out

Just undo the two drain bolts in the autotrans sump... Try Castrol TQM-ST, I am running it now and after saturday's cruise I can definately say I like it more than the Mitsubishi Diamond SP3 fluid.

Some interesting facts:

An auto gear box won't engage 4th (overdrive) until the car has reached normal operating temperature which equates to a min 16 kilometres.

Changing the oil involves disconecting the oil cooler hose which is connected to the radiator.. and placing your car in nuetral for no longer than 1 minute bursts to pump the oil out. Then you remove the drain plug, drain remaining oil and remember to replace that oil filter.

The workshop book specifies to repeat the process after adding the new oil to flush the system completly.

can you manually flush all the ATF out? i thought a substantial amount gets caught in the torque converter and you can't get that out without using a machine to flush it. but manually flushing it shouldn't be a prob, only thing is maybe you might have to replace it at an earlier interval. however it is a more sensible method to me actually but yet not many workshops here are willing to do it manually. they tell you to do the machine flush which is less labour intensive for them and charge you over fat mama's ass for it.

.

i dont think that's right , coz my g/box will change into 4th well before the 16 Kays or so!

i actually never noticed that sort of stuff except when the engine is cold it will stay in first for a bit longer

Im only stating what the book says 8)
I drove my car today looking for that elusive Only 3 gear changes not 4..

It did cruise to 80 without changing gears... But by then i had to brake.

But in my opinion it never does stay on three gears unless im wrong :D

im facing the same problem with my TR i never realy looked into the reason for why my overdrive wont work. it will change smooth from1st to 3rd but then revs out like crazy then changes back to 3rd i then keep overdrive off maybe i should switch the overdrive on after traveling the 16k then see if it kicks in. i read the repair manual and followed the step by step but i've been told its my tranny fluid being to old or the filter is blocked with build up of sludge from the car being sittin for so long. i have a question tho about the filter..... where is it?

Information not specific to your model of car, but useful when wanting to change the fluid in your transmission.

i know that mine will go into OD/4th too right from cold... perhaps you are getting confused with the operation of the lockup clutch that is used in OD?

that thing doesn't work when the coolant temp is cold
