One's made by Haltech and the other one isn't? :P

Just kidding.. they're both piggy back chips which means they take the signal from some of the vehicles sensors and modify it before feeding it to the ECU, tricking the ECU into advancing/retarding ignition timing, or raising/lowering injector duty cycle.

The major difference is that the Unichip ECU can only be tuned by an authorised agent, whereas the Haltech ECU can (potentially) be tuned by anyone - which is to say that the software is a free download from http://www.haltech.com.au/. Obviously you still want a competant tuner, not just any Joe off the street.

The Haltech ECU also has a bunch of outputs that can be used to drive extra injectors for water/meth injection or nitrous, or trigger a shift light, or numerous other things, and it can drive an electronic boost controller too to regulate boost at different engine loads. I know the Unichip can do some of this but I don't know exactly what.

Yeah the RRP for the Interceptor is about $1090, add on an hour for installation and a couple for tuning and the $1400-$1500 figure is about right. I believe the Interceptor is more flexible than the Unichip but then I know more about the Interceptor so I could be making that up.

If I were you I'd make the decision based on three things, in no particular order:

a. Who do you have easier access to, Haltech tuners or Unichip dealers?
b. Which tuner do you have more faith in, the Unichip dealer or the Haltech dealer?
c. Does it bother you that you have to go to a Unichip dealer to get a re-tune, or that you'll never be able to look at your engine map?
