I'm looking to upgrade the rear muffler soon, and was just wondering if anyone has tried putting a 380 vrx rear muffler on a 3rd gen, particularly TL ES? They look so meaty and was wondering if they'd fit under the stock rear bar, also wanna give the car a bit nicer deeper note (sick of hearing the rockers and v6 whirr even under full throttle :bowrofl:).

If the vrx muffler is still too quiet or wont fit, I've read there's a decent looking lukey stainless steel muffler than should fit an ES without cutting the rear bar, does anyone know the exact code? I want a really quiet muffler that wont drone on idle/cruise but gives a healthy roar when it's supposed to, say 3k onwards (basically don't want a dirty big cannon).

Cheers for any help

Doubt the 380 muffler would be louder than your stock one even if it did fit. If anything it'd probably be quiter.
If you want a quiet exhaust but abit meatier on take off, i'd be looking into a sports muffler off of a TJ sports, it's a direct replacement and i've done it to my car, sounds nice :).

you could just go to an exhaust shop and explain what you want, and only pay about $150 for a generic brand muffler that will sound just as good as a more expensive branded or mitsu genuine one

2nd hand mitsu sports muffler you can pick up for less than $100, a few people on here would have spares as they've upgraded their exhausts.

Sorry to hijack, but I bought a full (to cat) TL AWD VRX exhaust for my TJ AWD months ago from TMC. Finally put it on today ($65 at midas), sounds nice (not loud), seems to go abit better, BUT, I asked them to change the tip, as the big tip on the TL's rubs the bumper. Anyhow, they said they had bent it, and it was fine, don;t worry. Pigs A#se! Its rubbing badly. I've got to run stuff between city and macquarie uni all day tomorrow, so it is going to be an issue (melting my bumper), I'm in trouble!
Sorry piv, I recon its a good cheap mod, better than stock
(did I need to replace from the cat to the muffler - I did in the end)

Get a Lukey LR2779 or the stainless equivalent. They are quiet around low rpm yet still make plenty of deep noise at full tilt.

So is the lukey LR2779 or stainless is the exact same muffler on the sports and VRX models
so if i chop of my old stock muff and put this lukey on itll be the exact same as VRX model. I dont need to replace any of the piping would i.?

That's what I was after :D I think that's the muffler that lachlan someone had and found it too quiet and ended up getting something louder, but the sound clip sounded exactly like what I want.

Anyone know if this is a bolt on in place of the ES muffler without chopping a chunk out of my rear bar?

TJ Sports/VRX, KJ Verada GTV, TL/TW VR/VRX/VRX AWD, KL GTVi, and KW GTVi AWD
mufflers are all the same. infact the whole exhaust system is the same amongst the above
cars except for the AWD variants having a 90 degree bend instead of a shallower bend
before it goes under the rear axel. The VRX also has a straight chrome tip whereas the
others just have a mild steel droopy tip.

Now are all of the above a straight through style muffler?

Awesome info. I hate the look of the sports tip it looks to narrow and scrappy but the vrx tip looks meaty, maybe could get a custom 3 inch dump tip welded on instead. LR2779 seems the way to go then, cheers all :D
