View Full Version : Power Steering woes?

I'm getting groaning/whining noises mid corner from the front end, I think its an issue with my power steering. The harder I push the more noticable it is. The noise sounds identical/similar the noise it makes when on full lock when it's pushing against the bumpstops. Steering still feels normal.

Also, my power steering seems be to be noiser than I remember when parking/driving slowly, and the revs seem to fluctate more than they use to when parking/moving slowly. I'm not sure about these two thou, maybe it's just because im paying more attention to the power steering.

Any idea what it is? PS fluid needs to be changed? PS pump dieing? something unrelated to the PS?

thanks in advance.

It's more than likely that your pump is on the way out. If the fluid level in the reservoir is normal, and it's still having problems, check the belt to make sure it's correctly tensioned.

Power steering fluid will generally stay quite clean, unless the rack is leaking.

How heavy is the steering?

Thanks, I'll check those things tomorow in daylight. How do you check that the belt is tensioned correctly?

Steering feels normal I think, although if it's been getting heavier gradually, I might not have noticed.

How much is it gonna cost me if it's the pump?

I've posted this on many occassions. Do not fully lock steering wheels when turning on
cars with power steering. It is very bad for the pump. Always move back a little.

True,

But most of the time it's unavoidable fully locking the steering in the magna coz it's steering circle is crap, i never hit full lock when i had my commodore

I know, but I've hit it (the bumpstops) accidentally enough times to know what it sounds like when the PS is strainging.

My brother had his power steering pump replaced in his KJ2 because it started to whine like that whining sound you get in old VN-VR commodores like bearings have gone. It still worked fine but just sounded bad.

I checked the fluid level, and it is isn't even showing up on the dipstick:shock:

odd..I remember checking it not long ago, and I can't see any leaks. Hopefully it will be fine once I top it up. Btw, the manual says to use mitus-specific fluid..where do I get it from? A local mitsu dealer?

I topped up the fluid, and the groaning noises are gone. Had a superficial look for leaks, and coudln't find any. I guess I'll just keep an eye out on it fluid level, and for leaks, and do a more detailed insepection later if needed.
