how much do you reckon it would cost to:
get a new engine, something like an sr20 along lines like that, convert the car to rwd, convert it to either a 5 or 6 speend manual?
i don't care if it sounds nuts, cause i already know it is, i'm just curious, do you reckon 25k would cover it?

25k? Haha. Try more than double that...

why go sr .... maybe VG... or 2j lol ....
i think it would be cheaper to put a shell over a commo lol

so you reckon 50+k to do that ay
the reason i'm asking is i'm trying to think of a unique project car, and thought if i could make use out of the magna shell so i don't have to waste money buying another car, but if its going to cost that much to get that all done, then i won't consider that option.
then i ask, what would be the best way of upgrading the engine, take into account that by the time i'm ready to start this project of mine, my car will have clocked up 300 000 ( i have another 105 000k to go, which will take me to the 10th month of next year ets) it will either be time to buy a new car, or do something nutty with this car i.e a new engine, and put two snails in
u wanna do unique?
try this:
Worked* GenIII in the Magna and converted to RWD with a 6 speed.
* monster cam, diff gears, zorst system, injectors, bigger throttle body...go fer it.

there was that white v8 rwd 3rd gen magna racing a few years back. I cant remember which class it was in though. Had a holden V8 in it.

why dont you just buy an AWD magna and then do a manual conversion and then do somthing hardcore to the engine like twin turbo, and get the twin cam 24V heads for it. with nos or somthing that would kill anything as doing a RWD conversion would require using the AWD platform and removing the FWD component. just stay AWD sooo much better and cheper and easier
dont change to SR20 too small an engine, if you were going to change the engine go 2.5L mivec 160kw from a FTO and then turbo that.

Or just by the FTO...
:D
Anyhow, I've sorta noticed every few days valaxy66 will post something like "Im planin on xxx turbo car next year" or "I plan to turbo a xxx".
The guy's 18. And from a previous thread I noticed, he doesn't own his car, and he lives with his parents.
Man I could be completely wrong about you though, so if you've got the money, and the know-how, then good luck!

Get yourself on your own 2 feet before even thinking about pouring all your life savings into a car. Have you got a full time job? How long are you planning to stay living at home?
Just make sure whatever you do to your car is realistic and not fanatasy. Any RWD conversion to a FWD car will cost ALOT, and the only known magnas (could be wrong) that are RWD are either show (McBeths) or for Racing (White V8).

i own my car( not in my name for insurence reasons), and of course i live with my parents, i wont be moving out anytime soon, that would be stupid, i have a lot of money saved up from my job ( thanks to sacrificing drinking on weekends) and i'm just trying to get ideas for a porject car next year, and i don't want to hear ' invest your moment, save it for a house blah blah blah' cause i'm not interested in that and wont be untill i'm working fulltime for an airliner/cooperate jet company
yea i understand were you lads are coming from...sometimes i think yea i'll wait till i'm older i.e 21+ but then i think, the stupid ass magna with no balls, and i can't help but ask questions about modifying, its so darn interesting what you can do cars

Cool... fair enough. Still, converting a Magna to RWD and slapping in a SR20 is still... 'aiming a little high', if all your after is a project car.

yea i am, my goal is to be in a good flying job by the age of 25, otherwise i'm going to have a look at another career option ( air traffic controller prehaps)
i own my car( not in my name for insurence reasons)...
As I said in this thread (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41414):
I'd hesitate doing that....it means you won't start building up a no-claim bonus, and it will cost you more when you eventually do try to insure a car in your own name....
You're generally best off insuring a car in your own name as soon as possible.
When I was 17, I insured my $1000 Datsun in my own name, and started building up a no-claim bonus. By the time I went to insure a more expensive car, I already had a reasonable no-claim bonus, thus reducing the premium costs significantly.
Cheers,
Martin.

Hang on a second...
and im lucky thatr my dad has bought me a car and that he pays for the insurence, servicing and reggo ( not anymore since getting number plates)
From this thread...
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29393&page=5
...dude. Buy your OWN car, and mod that. It'd be kind of rude to turn the car YOUR DAD BOUGHT YOU into a shell...
Buy an old Torana or somethin, or whatever old classic tickles your fancy, with YOUR own money, and don't even try to mod it to make it fully sick, just try and get it up to scratch! If you can follow through with that, THEN go silly and mod it...
...jeezus christ. I wish I got life handed to me on a silver platter.

Ouch!
Valaxy, never mind mate. Hold on to your aspirations.
As you probably already know getting to be a commercial pilot will take a long time unless you enter via the RAAF, You will need to gain hours on twins in a regional airline for a few years and that means doing it tough usually in the NT or outback QLD.
I've been in ATC for 25 years, entered when I was 19 and it's been a fantastic career. I reccomend it if you ever decide on it instead.

I dont understand why people would go to all the trouble to turn a FWD car into an RWD car when there is an AWD available. For the money you would spend on the magna, buy a bloody SS commodore or xr6t and be done with it.... Then spend money making it 'custom' or whatever.

yea, it is a hard slog, i hope to get a flight instructor job at the end of my course next year (around july), i've looked into atc and i reckon that would be a good job, and i think that i'd have a good chance getting atc if i've got my cpl,
and to update from that thread, i now pay for everything, since my income from my job now is good enough( i work my ass off but, so many late nights), but the car is still in dad name ( for cheaper insurence), when i get my new car i'll be switching it, my dad drive his own car
and i comepletely forgot about some magnas having awd, that would be much easier, but i doubt i'll go down the magna path, and if i do, it would probly be a ralliart magna with twin turbo setup in it.
as i said before i like thinking up ideas for car moding etc, i find it enjoying and highly interesting, and i like to increase my knowleadge about cars etc and this club is very good for that
so you reckon i'm better of getting the car insured under my name now, i shall consider your advice

Closest thing to a RWD magna would be a sigma with a 1st gen front and rear end conversion + the interior. I think that would be awsome :D
But im over the "wish my car was rwd" thing lol

do whatcha gotts to do mate. heaps of old school datsuns and stuff like that that you can go spastic with. the older cars seem to take less mods to fit practically anything into them. slap an RB26dett into a 78 HZ kingswood...that'll turn heads for sure. if ya want the newer cars shoot for something already rear wheel to be on the cheaper side of things. AWD would be fun also with something huge under the hood. no reason why you cant do it over time also mate. never know what the future holds
