View Full Version : Brake dust! What do I do?

Any idea what to do about this?
I noticed brake dust sticks to alloys. Powder coated and chrome not that much.
Spoke to the mechanic today brought the car in to fix cv joint, valve stem seals, starter motor and brakes. Asked him if they can get any pads that don't emit as much brake dust and he said you can't because brake pads have a lot of carbon in it. Not asbestos anymore.
Any idea if this is true? Am I able to get a hold of some sort of brake pads that don't turn my wheels shadow chromed every 6 days after washing?
Cheers
P.S Anybody heard of brake dust shields?

Ive heard of a product called Michelin Brake dust repellant which is sort of wax for the wheels
What pads do you have in there at the moment?
Yes what the mechanic said is true.
I wouldn't go near those dust shields as they look like they would hold a LOT of heat.

If you want your brakes to fade and possibly fail, not to mention warp your discs while doing it, use the dust shields. But seriosuly, I think there is a wax product which just makes the dust easier to come off. Unfortunately if you want less dust, you need to look at switching pads.

Yep. Europe was the first to stop using pads with asbestos. We started doing it a few
years back. Just polish the wheels and was them regularly.

low dust pads are usually less effective in braking aswell. but do last longer. from what i hear.
Id be finding a way to keep the dust from sticking, rather than finding different pads

I was going to say ultimates are lower dust pad for the standard caliper. As for the AWD's and Ralliarts, the EBC green stuff is a low dust kevlar based compound.

I found that my standard VR-X rims leave themselves open to a lot of brake dust and other crap. I recently bought some Poorboys Wheel Sealant (https://www.waxit.com.au/proddetail.asp?prod=PB0018&cat=29) and applied them to my wheels. It's no magic product, but I've noticed my wheels to be significantly cleaner/shinier in the week or two between washes. It's $25 for a tub, but I did all four of my wheels for a first time, and it barely made a dent in the tub.

Well, lower than some but I wouldn't call them low dust. My wheels a visibly darker at the front than the rears a few weeks after a wash and I don't brake hard all the time.

I'm running rear asbestos  ... jeez my back wheels stay CLEAN!
But at front they're not, they get dusty black within 100km (Ferodo Excel & Zero).
Have been spending $1 every week at the Carlovers each time I drive past one.
Some say using Mr Sheen keeps the dirt off longer, haven't tried it myself yet.

Did you stock up before they became illegal?
Cause you haven't been able to buy them for a few years now.

ya I scored 2 sets new-old-stock rears off ePay,
didn't realise they were asbestos till I noticed all the warning labels on the box...
Put them on both KJ wagon & TH sedan few mths ago and they work great!
BASTARD!!!!
Would use asbestos pads anyday over the ****e they are made out of now! (although the kevlar ones are ok)

I have Ferodo Excels on the front and the wheels are covered in a nice film of brake dust in around a week - within in a month or so they are deadset filthy. I don't mind it though as it gives my car a bit of a euro look.
You haven't cleaned your car for over a month?

Car gets vacuumed every one to two weeks and washed maybe every couple months. However, if she plays her cards right she sometimes gets a high pressure hose at the local carlovers after the vacuum.

you could try ripping off your alloys and coating them in silicone spray or something of the likes. that way when it builds up on the inner, rip off your aloys giveem a whipe out and they will be almost like brand new. whe you wash your wheels and tyres, pressure spray em and they will be like the day you go them. The silcone will make it slide off. also make em uber shiny for a while aswell.
as for the asbestos issue, anyone noticed break pulse appearing since swapping to kevlar or the new softeneing agent (carbon?)
now, i dont brake hard but i have had my disks machined twice to counteract this.. changed to some new bendix aswell after the last machining... if the pulse starts again, i think i wont bother getting new pads. i think a brake upgrade will suffice :D
