i know that both are fundamently a full auto box but what is the difference in the gearbox
is the tiptronic box just bult stronger to cope with the extra downshifts? and the extra gear

AFAIK, there is no difference in hardware, its all software related. The 4 speed ones came
out in the standard auto from TE to TJI and came out in the tippy from TJII onwards. The
5 speed came out standard i think from TH and the tippy came out later.

Tippy is auto, it's just it's got electronics so it's easier to be a manual shifter, still 100% auto and therefore boring

TH tippy was only 4 spd. 5 speed didn't come out until TJ sports/vrx in 2000.
I've heard the tippy box had slightly diff ratios to the standard 4spd, would have to do some research into that.

yeah thats what i originally thought but i saw on fourms that ppl were changing the whole gearbox to do a tippy conversion? why not just change the shifter and the ECU?
mabey they were talking about going to a 5sp tippy (might as well go manual while you are at it)

Well exactly, if ppl want to convert to tippy then it aint for performance thats for sure!!
afaik its for the extra gear, although i highly doubt it would provide any real performance gains!!

and for the fact it has a manual mode which you cant really consider manual as it has no clutch!! lol

I know the gear selector panel is different :) apart from that I have no idea :)
