My outer CV boot shit itself sometime this morning. Rang around mechanic's and they all seem to be closed till new year, and i have to leave for melbourne on the 30th. I went and bought a new boot this morning, mitsu wanted $65 for the complete kit, so i went to Auto One and got it for $14.95.
So can i make it to melbourne and get it done down there???

mate if its only the boot and the joint hasnt started showing any signs of damage(ticking etc) you will be fine. as a precaution you might just want to buy some grease and repack it before you leave, and check it along the way. as long as theres grease in there it will be fine. there arent many tight turns between here and melbourne.

i just pulled my wheel off to have a closer look. there is a split in the boot about 2-3 inches long and grease all through my mag wheel. while i was under there i saw some grease near the gearbox and found that the inner boot has split as well.
Did i run over a chinaman or something?? because i've behaved myself very well recently and some really bad carma has come around and bitten me on the arse!!!!!

well i honestly have no idea about cv joints or even much mechanical but maybe you could repack with grease and then try and tape up or seal the boot with silicon or something??? Should at least get you to melbourne. Drive safe and take it easy getting here.

Speaking from experience, as long as you don't do front wheel burnouts you should be okay for ages.
You just have to keep the stress off the joints and you'll be fine.

Ask a mechanic and chances are they'll say "Dont do it..get it changed" mainly coz if they say it'll be fine and it isnt..then they're liable.
But it should be ok, just keep it greased up.

It is a bit unfair to only quote this post as several in this thread made me open my eyes, the fact the grease has left the joint should be an indication in it self that it is not getting lubrication.
Any amount of dust will damage the boot. Your better getting a replacement shaft for about $120.00.
As for distance and time, no where or distance is a good start from when you first see the split.
I am a mechanic and have replaced many shafts as they have been driven hundreds or thousands of km with split boots. Dust goes in, they are precision items and unless you are intending to roll from sydney to Melbourne (melb is downhill from sydney i guess) then replace it before you regret it.
If you want to pop past on your way to or from Geelong mate I can fit the new boots and you can hope there is no damage, you will also need a good supply of cv grease, it is not normal grease btw.
The grease also helps cool the joint.

I wouldn't recommend driving any real distance with a split boot. Any grease you pack in there will be flung out in a matter of minutes at any more than 15km/h. A trip to Melbourne at 110km/h will leave it quite dry and as Mal said, it could get quite hot.
I know it is now probably too late, as you have probably left, there is a place at Northmead near Parramatta that do CVs really quick, they could be open today??
They are in a small industrial complex just to the north side of James Ruse drive on Windsor Rd. They did mine for the Galant on a Saturday morning.

that just reminds me, do you guys n girls think that lowering effects your cv's, as since lowering i have had 3 clunky cv's.
ps none of this "i think" stuff, only if you have noticed a problem!

I don't know, but...
since lowering i have had 3 clunky cv's.
Since i lowered mine it clunks and it also squeeks, quite badly, and it has only been doing this since it was lowered so i figure it must be because of it :?
