Hi guys, forgive me if i say anything amazingly ignorant right now but I am not yet overly familiar with magnas. My TF Sports (not sure about any other models) has two circular cavities roughly four inches in diameter on the very top of the dash with covers that pop off when i prise them with a flat head screw driver. I was just wondering what these were for, and if anyone knows whether a 4 inch speaker will fit into them. Because if they do i was thinking of installing a 3 way system for my front stage with the 6.5's in the door, the four inchers up on the dash and the tweets in the a-pillar. Stupid idea? If not would they be a good tweeter location? Thinking about it could anyone with splits in the front of their car please respond to this thread and tell me whereabouts they installed their tweeters?
Thanks heaps guys,
Anthony

normally when you have a 3-way speaker system at the front
the 2 speakers normally stay together and the tweeter is placed where the side mirrors are, same place as the new magnas have them in the tweeter pods
but this set-up is up to you
you should be able to fit 4" speakers in the top of the dash but i dont know how hard it is to get wiring there unless there is already a speaker in there

Im running 3 way (with 9" subs in the doors, 2 pairs of 3" midranges and morel supremos all mounted in the kicks, and mt22 ambients on the a-pillar)
Your best bet with three way is clustering them in the kickpanels.
That way you get the best path length difference which is best for staging. Also means there is little separation between the mids and midranges.
The midrange can vent into the a-pillar through the service hole at the base of the apillar as well. (but requires a bit of modifying)
If you have things like time alignment at your disposal you could mount them all high, but your car wont stage well from the passengers side as the nearest speaker is too close to you, and the opposite speaker is too far. TA and fade can correct this to a certain extent, but only for one seat.
The cap up the top of the dash is for access to the bolts that take out the dash and also for premium speakers, but arent necessarily the best spot for good imaging. If you want something neat and easy this may be a good option though.
Remember to try and seal up the dash from the bottom if you use this (esp with cone midranges) or pack the space with acoustic foam or some sort of dampening material to eliminate soundwaves from under the dash which would distort your imaging.
Also the verada tweeter pods are around $30 a pair from mitsu and fit most 1" tweets, these are mounted into the delta panel near the side mirrors.
Peace
Tim

Thanks for that mate. So the pods would fit straight into my tf? And im guessing they would look a lot neater and more professional hay? Was it a lot of work to install your three way system? Cheers

Also are you saying that 4 Inch mid ranges would fit in my cars A-pillar? if so that would be awesome

Yes they do look a lot neater, they take 2 seconds to install, you just need to run wires etc as well. Make sure your tweets fit in first. (go to a dealer and ask to have a look in a verada or vrx perhaps before you order them)
I am refering to the base of the a-pillar, (under neath where the fuse box is on the drivers side) there is a small service hole there behind all the carpet.
An older pic with the legatia venting into the bottom of the a-pillar. and the supremo. Tweeter positioning was nice and deep, midranges needed more angle though.

Prior to that using a sealed cavity for the mids. Probably staged best and had great stage height

Prior to that using an open baffle (staged poorly as it was just slapped together)

I'm currently using a bigger baffle with two midranges mounted in an MTM config in the kickpanels. Still yet to seal up the fibreglass pod (just has acoustic foam on the drivers side)

Once I get it staging perfectly I'll make it look good. Hence the ghetto'ness :)
it may be a bit of hassle getting midranges in there, depends how big the basket structure is. Nothings impossible though.
It hasnt been easy for me, but i like the challenge, as soon as i start to finish something i'll re start.
I think im just going to install hlcd (horns) and be done with it.
Peace
Tim
Horns ehh? horny horns....awesome. Once u get everything sorted out, u can send us photos of your hard labour so we can cheat off you :D
nice, i hadnt seen the latest setup tim.. what are your xover points like? also, for ease of when i get my 4" mids in my kicks, what angle have you found stages best on the mids/tweets in kick? ill be most likely going ambients in the dash pods firing at windscreen.
you got 2 sets of ambients in the A pillar? i wouldnt think there would be a need for that, unless your angling varies to heighten staging.
ive never done a kick setup for tweeters before, and im a bit worried about the height of the staging if not done properly. obviously ill be blu tacing to see what sounds best, but its a bit of a tedious process and i rarely ahve a huge amount of time on my hands.

Damon

one thing i know, 4' alpines do not fit in the dash locations, they're too deep. well in mine they are, but i have a ts, i don't know if you're holes are the same.

No just one set of ambients in the a-pillar sorry, the verada tweeter pods are a good option for ambients though.
Stage height is tricky, but well worth it with benefits with depth and staging. Im still not happy with my setup but havent had enough time to play around with it.
Crossover points currently: Although they change every day.
Sub 40 hz down 18db
Midbasses 40hz 18db - 350 18db
Midranges 350hz 18db - 2.5khz 12db
Main tweets - 3 khz 12db
Ambients 8khz 12db
Once I seal up the midranges i can drop the xover point to around 300.
Best bet with ambients is using the jaycar super tweeter crossovers (10khz 12db/oct)
