Havent found a car yet but was wondering how much one would pay to rebuild a 3.5 engine out of a TH magna?

Has any one on the forums had experience in this or know what it involves? And is there any kind of warranty you get when you do this kind of work?

Thanks in advance everyone

Warranty would be up to the rebuilder, wouldn't be surprised if you have to fork out more $$ for a warranty either. What specificly are you rebuilding, bottom end only, bottom/top and leaving the trans? May make it easier for the members in the know to give you a semi-accurate figure.

Thanks for the reply,

Dont know much about the details of what constitutes a rebuild but whatever I would be looking at if I wanted to rebuild an engine (not transmission) that had done a few ks eg 250xxx for the purpose of restoring it closer to original condition. T

This would, correct me if im wrong, be a safeguard for keeping the engine going into the 300xxx.

Just curious as was pondering the idea for my TR 94 which had done 250xxx and was wondering what the story was with the 3.5 VS from a TH or later.

I got quoted 1100 to get my 2.6 Astron Fully reconditioned, Flat topped pistons, port matched head, mild cam, ECU reprogram.

God i love knowing people in the business.

Then the auto blew up, so i didnt bother.

I can get a brand new genuine Mitsubishi 3.5L short motor (ie. assembled block, piston, crank, no sump, no head) for $1,000 still in its box.

Going through this process ATM.

Planning to just do the heads at this stage.

Progress so far- Deshrouded Valves, Ported and Polished, 3 angle Valve cut, decked. Getting flow bench tested this week. :)

Flow bench results won't mean a great deal, as things like port velocity are more important to VE and efficiency of heads.

To come - reassemble heads with Ralliart Cams, Ralliart Valve Springs, install Greddy Emanage. ( all sitting on loungeroom floor  )

Here are some rough calculation for a rebuild.

Heads only

Port and Polish $1000+
New Lash adjusters $130
3 angle valve job $120
Flow bench $120
Cams and Cam gears(RPW) $1400
OR
Ralliart Cams $300
Head Gaskets $180
Reassemble heads $220
Extractors and muffler $800
Seals and Gaskets $300+
Install new heads on existing engine ???
Misc Labour/ Fluids ???
Greddy Emanage and tune $1000

Short Block

Dismantle Block ???
Pistons $400
Resize conrods +ARP Bolts $400
Rebore $250
Balance engine $400
Billet Flywheel $600
Clutch $600
Seals and Gaskets $300+
Reassemble engine ???
Install rebuilt engine,misc Labour ???

Obviously, prices will vary and you can save on labour by doing some of the work yourself, but I'm not game to add this all up. lol
