Hey, this is just a general audio question. :?:

Ive got a 12" and a 10".. Both kicker comps. I hear people say that its not a good idea to have different sized subs. Something to do with screwing up the SPL levels or SQ?? i dunno...

Can someone clarify this for me please.

Thanks again.

Go back and have a look at "boot install setup" topic this might help a bit.

a lot of people reckon that different size subs is stupid, but only if you have them turned stupid. each one will have to be off a different amp, and basically run the subs so they're not playing the same frequencies... eg, 12" from 50-60Hz down and the 10" 50-60Hz upwards... (of course depending on the tuning of the subs and box etc etc)

I highly recomend u dont do it...if u do...silly boy will have sum fun tuning...and i gaurentee ull b taking one out withing a few weeks.

Nah.. i'll keep both the subs, currently theyr running of the same amp along with the 6x9's. And as far as i can tell theyr 'punching' at the same rate as each other.

Your right about the frequency settings but, ill have to play around with that. Get it sounding mickey.

Thanks for the help but.

Another thing if you could help me out with. With the ground cable for the amp. Whats the best thing to do.. simply attach it to the body of the car, or run the cable directly to the earth that comes out of the engine. (That yellow and black wire)
Or doesnt it matter :?

dude...different sized subs will NEVER punch together at the same rate. It may b close...but just messing with the proper sound

subs have different sensitivities levels... and the 10 will be playing alot faster then the 12..... so instead of reproducing the sound as close as possible the 10 will play it first then the 12 will a fraction of a second behind therefore instead of the actual sound lasting 0.643of a second your setup will be 0.723 for example it may not sound much but if you are going for sound qulity then its a big no no. plus disconnect the 10 so the 12 will get more power and sound alot nicer....
u dont mix driver sizes...just as u dont have say a pioneer split in the left door and a alphine split in the right hand door they both sound different its so bogan dodgey. sell the 10 and buy another matching 12 or buy a bigger amp

If you want the technical explanation of what is really happening with two different sub sizes then read my post in the "boot install setup" thread or one I wrote a while ago in the "Venom Subs" thread.

It's all about correct mounting, and I would have to agree with aSyLuM that correct filtering (or "tuning") is also the way to go, just look at a 3-way HiFi speaker box. As long as there are crossovers to correctly route the signal then you have a really nice sounding cabinet. You can build passive filters yourself so that you can run the subs off the same amp, although you would need to run the subs in parallel (which, as long as your amp can handle 2ohms impedance, will produce twice the ouput power), although two amps would be better.

If you filter your two subs correctly, then they will not clash, but you will get a much more defined sound because each driver will be dedicated to a specific frequency range. And besides, if you think it sounds good, then don't worry about it.

I just installed my sisters amp into her magna yesterday, and as per all my installations, i grounded it to the chassis. Since it was a boot install, i grounded it to the tyre well, were the spare is kept. Sanded the paint back to the bare metal (so it was nice and shiny), then drilled a hole through the chassis. Then, using nuts and a bolt I made a secure ground to the car.
