hey all

got a 5 speed manual vrx (stock no mods). I've never raced before but i'll probably take it to the drag strip one day. Got a few questions actually as i know that a lot of u have already been to the drag strip before

1. How much does it cost?
2. Is there any procedure before racing so as i can get the best out of the car?
3. 98 RON v/s 91 RON
3. At what rpm do i change gears ?
4. How do i get a great launch - at what rpm do i hold the engine before dumping the clutch?

All comments welcome!

Well i can answer the last one for you, dont dump the clutch, just take off at 1000 rpm and ease the clutch out but not to softly and take off

Dumping it will rusult in wheel spin and loss of overall time and speed so it will slow you down, oh and don't do a burnout unless u have wide ass drag tyres on the front :P

Practice makes perfect mate..

Take it down the strip.. try a few difference launches and shift points during all the runs and see how you go..

Dont dump the clutch, slip it off the start, dumping = spin or bogging down. Shift when your power drops off, I shift at around 5900-6000rpm I flat shift at the drags to. Fuel wont make much if any of a difference to u.

AutoSpeed magazine did a test about a year ago with a TJ Sports and an accelerometer (G-sensor). Their tests show that your acceleration in 1st gear is greater than your acceleration at any point in 2nd gear. Assuming they're right (and there's no reason to believe they're not) it means you should hold on to the limiter before changing gear, because no matter what engine speed you land at in 2nd gear you'll be accelerating slower than you were when you left 1st.

The same held for 2nd-3rd, and 3rd-4th from memory. I'll try and dig up the article.

Edit: I lied, it was a TL GTVi..

If I change gears quickly anywhere above 5000rpm in my car all I get is a huge crunching sound and a missed gear. lol

Yeh PM the user Type40, he will be able to help you with shift points etc!!

But as someone has said its all about trial and error, we all know our own cars and what they can do so take her for a few runs test out different shift points etc!!

gOod luck!

I never goto the drags with anymore then about 10litres of fuel in the tank or a spare wheel in the boot. I would also remove heavy audio equipment.

TL sports test only applies to the transmission type aswell (especially if it was auto)

in my 3.5L I found shifting at 5000-5500rpm was pulling slightly better times. The 2nd gear in my manual was pulling better at a slightly lower RPM

i think it costs about $25
you need to wear a helmet and covered clothing
i suggest taking out any unnessesary weight eg.spare tyre, girl friend hehe
i just change gear where the red line starts on the tacho
my trick to get a good take off is to hold the handbrake up and and engage the clutch, as if ur doing a hill start.hold it at bout 1500-2000 rpm then put the hand brake down and take off but becareful, dont plant the accelerator straight away or you will spin. then go for gold

I find the best way to launch quickly (manual TJ sports) is to hold the engine revs at @3500-4000rpm, slip the clutch a bit and progressively apply more power as you slip the clutch. Basically you need some clutch slip to keep the revs up, to prevent bogging. Not it is not good for your clutch.

As for shift points, about 6300rpm seems right for me. Anymore and the power drops off too much, you might as well be in the next gear. Yes the power does start dropping off well before redline, but shifting later means you'll be closer to peak power in the next gear..it's a matter of finding the balance.

Remember that the Autospeed test was done in a 4 speed AUTO! A 5 speed manual will be different. I did a simmilar test on my manual using an inclinometer while being filmed with a camcorder. I found the best change points for 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd to be at 6000 -6,200rpm.
This was done before my engine mods.
I will be doing another more accurate test soon.

TL GTVi would have been a 5 speed auto, so practically the same ratios as the manual.
