Howdy
I have a set of genuine floor mats in my TJ Advance but they tend to slide around a lot when I get in and out of the car. I used the hook that came with them at first, but now that's just worn a hole in the carpet so the hook doesn't stay in the right spot.
I'd like a solution that doesn't involve any sort of permanent mod - ie I want to be able to remove it without a trace if I have to.
Any ideas?

Get a big ass needle, and some thread, and sew them to the carpet.
Not all the way around the mat, just in the corners.
Then when you want to remove them you can just snip the thread with scissors. And I assume the mats are rubber, so a needle hole will hardly be visible when you remove it.

Velcro is your friend here. Makes it easy to pull them out to vacuum etc

Actually the mats are carpet, with a vinyl insert where your heel goes.
I will probably go the Velcro way I think - i'll try just using the hook side and see how well it grips to the carpet underneath.
It's actually the second set i've had - on the first set (which I bought the day I got the car) the vinyl started to come undone and lifted - that was just over 3 months ago. Took them back and got them replaced under warranty. I figure a set of $140 floor mats should last longer than 3 months :)

Yep, velcro is the best, attach to area closest to the drivers and passengers seat. Use a couple of long pieces and stitch on ... go to Bunnings and buy by the metre.
Or
Go to Clarke Rubber an buy a piece of black cargo mat. Its a metre by a metre at about $14 and sew to the underside of the mat. IT WON'T MOOVE THEN. I have a piece in the back of the mitsi for shopping days. The shopping bags stay dead still, awesome stuff
Hope this helps

Or get a couple of screws and screw em into the floor. Works for me and you dont see the holes in the carpet after theyve been removed either :)

Whenever I have replaced my floor mats I've only bought this grey 4 piece set from Big W (sorry can't remember the brand).
Features:
- thick pile carpet with a black heel section
- little dimples underneath to keep them in place which actually work
- good coverage of the floor (the drivers one goes up under the peddles) which also helps keep them in place as they have no where to really slide
- long lasting
They cost about $55 so if you go have a look in biggers they shouldn't be too hard to find.

Exactly what are the screws going in to though? I don't really want to make extra holes in the underside of the car. :)
I'm probably heading in to a carpet place today to see what they have - went to a shop to get some Velcro yesterday but they didn't have anytihng that I thought would grip to car carpet very well.

you can buy hooks from kmart that clamp onto the edge of the carpet and two needles go into existing carpet so they won't budge. look in the Auto dept.

Try a layer of drawer underlay, the stuff you lay in drawers to stop stuff sliding around.
Works great under any mat.
