Hi Guys, my JL 13W7 finally came in at jb today, pretty exciting stuff. I've got my two 1000/1's and I'm gonna put one into each voice coil. Yes I know, its a 1000 wrms sub, but every review ive read about them the auditioner has said that it needs double that to really get it moving. So thats what i'm doing. I digress, I am just about to get my enclosure built and I'm just wondering, if any of you know from experience, what would be the best position for the sub in my boot? I obviously have a tf and need to keep my spare. I was thiking of maybe firing it forwards through the ski-flap? Any suggestions will be very very welcome.
Thanks
Anthony

What kind of music do you listen to? hip hop/rnb type music or dance/trance/techno type music?

I actually listen to a bit of everything but more towards the rnb and hip hop. I bought this sub cos every review said it could play both quicky kick drum type bass but also deep low bass equally well

build a box that sits behind the back sit and have the sub facing towards the back of the car this is how mines setup and sounds pretty good
but when my holidays come i will be building it it between the 2 tyre arches
oh and how are you mounting your amps?
i would build side panels for then to sit in the boot

Ive got 4 amps, 2 1000/1 and 2 300/4's plus a 12 farad capacitor so im thinking of building a fake floor and sinking them under perspex. What do you think? So you have the back of your sub box touching your ski flap? Or the face of the sub?
Thanks for the quick reply,
Anthony

if your going to build a false floor then you will need decent air flow so the amps dont overheat also some people normally put computer fans to keep the amps cool
well my sub box has the back sit up against the rear seat so the subs are firing towards the rear of the car
as for your setup i would build a box for the 2 subs, a panel on either side of the boot for 2 amps and for the false floor have the other 2 amps and the capacitor with perspex to show them off
should look really nice when its done

Yeh thats a good idea. Thanks heaps for that. I'm doing it with my mate who is a professional installer but he has never done a magna before so its really good to get some input. Should look really good. Will post pics when its finished. Thanks for your help Mr Rob.

hey mate,
nice choice of sub :D im running a 10W6 atm and i couldnt be happier, easily the best sounding sub ive heard in my life, better than the ones are supposedly beat it :)
in regards to woofer positioning, especially with a sub like that, youll want to mount it in a rear corner of the boot, firing angled forwards, at the opposite wheel arch. this position masks the position of the woofer so it blends better and brings the bass right forwards to heighten your staging.
wether to go ported or sealed is completely up to choice, but personally i find that these woofers can play ideally in a ported enclosure, whereas some subs will suffer in response from a ported enclosure, plus you get the extra volume.
i run my W6 firing backwards, ported, and it goes brilliantly, i would love to run it in a corner but my preferred install design didnt really allow for that :)

be sure to let me know how it sounds when your done, what else is running in your system? head unit, fronts, rears? pending that, it could be an awesome contendor for sq competitions :D

Damon

Thanks for the advice mate. Yeh i got the two 1000/1's into a 13W7, one of my 300/4's bridges into the ZR650-CSi splits which are the reference series ones, the best JL make and you have to get them brought into aus specially by custom car sound. I have the JL VR690-CXI six by nines in the back running off two of the four channels of my second 300/4. I have two spare channels atthe moment that I'm deciding what to do with. I also have stinger platinum series wiring throughout, the Dream series RCA's, my Head Unit is last years pioneer DEH-P1Y, which was a competition deck and pretty high quality with independant sub control and 3 6-volt pre outs etc. I also have a stinger 12 farad hybrid capacitor. I think thats about everything. The funniest thing is, every component that i have bought I have never listened to as they were all special order items. I think maybe i trust JL a little too much!!!

Thats some really nice gear there!
I got a DEH-P1Y for my wifes magna off the wall at Strathfield as they have now been superseded.
I am currently using an american 5700DVD in my Verada with the Dynamics Processor and want to change subs from my Kicker 12l5's to JL 12w6's
May I ask how much JB charged for the 13w7?

If you listen more to rnb/hip hop then face the sub to the back of the car and put the box right up against the back seat. If you were into dance/fast beat music i would have said fire it into the cabin as it's more punchy, but you lose abit of the "Bass".

yeah really depends if you want loud and boomy or punchy and clear, mine is behind the drivers side taillight, firing sideways, which sounds extremely clean and linear (no real peaks or drops at certain frequencies) could probably be louder (tho 135dB is plenty) but i prefer to have the same amount of bass no matter what note its playing, rather than finding songs that hit the right notes for it to sound good!

Well I may only be 18 years old but this is already the third sound system I have built. I have always gone through jb hi fi and as a result have formed a pretty good relationship with my local store's salesmen. I actually bought the only 13W7 in Australia, it RRP's for $1999 but the boys did it for me for $1699 but let me know if you are planning on buying one. What do you think of the deh-p1y? its easily the best Head unit I have ever used. I love it. But yeh I say and have always said that JL is the way to go!

Yeah I love JL's too and cant wait to replace my Kickers with 2 w7's or w6v2's
I had the 12w6's running off a Phoenix Gold Titanium before but sold the car with system to move to Australia.
The JB at Kotara here in Newcastle qouted me $1650 each for 13w7's but I know I can get them cheaper when I am ready.
The Deh-P1Y hasn't gone into the wifes car yet but I have already made discs of different screensavers for it.
Have you checked out the japanese pioneer site for new graphics?
