Is yours the original motor? any major work done?

RuSSiaN
26-10-2006, 11:16 AM
Nope, its been reconditioned once and I just got the auto done last week

It really depends on the car, how good the motor stays, if its looked after, you will be sitting on 300K no problems.

But if the car didnt do its normal services etc, then you might get a few problems

But I cant stress enough, some cars run perfect at 300, and some dont

It's just like human ages

320000, i think some of my paint is original.

My little bro's verada = 380000 on original engine and gear box, cracked radiator only problem ever to be fixed.

As stated, if its been looked after then theres not a problem.

A reconditioned V6 for a 2nd Gen isnt to expensive anyways if something does go wrong, heaven forbid.

Oh noes! Soon your car will explode!
Hehe not really, my TR made it to just over 300k kms and would have kept going with abit of TLC. That was on original motor and gearbox too. As long as it's been looked after, kms don't mean a thing.

I'm looking forward to the day I can proudly say "I got her to 300,000."

At my current rate should take another 18 mths - 2 years to get there.

By then I'll have definately got my money's worth.

i kno a few little signs. rev it up to 4-5000rpm. it should drop quickly if its a decent chain. but if it takes a while to drop then u gotta replace it.
have a listen whenu start the car. if u hear a chronic rattle then thats bad, make sure it aint ur tappets tho.
or u can just take of ur rocker cover and have a look at it. they're a pain to replace tho... so damn expensive

A rattle will be the timing chain, the tappets will make a ticking/tapping sound. Slightly different.

Mines starting to get a lil annoying, after a couple hours of driving each day you can hear the chain rattling. I was told by a mechaninc that its the tensioner that causes the chain to rattl and then eventually break and destroy pistons and what not. Anyways my old man found someone that would do the timing chain for $500, which aint too bad.

u wont find anywhere that will do it for under $1000 unless ur family.
u could do it ur self if u can borow some tools and a free weekend plus the manual.
the kit off ebay is $99 .

RoGuE_StreaK
16-11-2006, 12:45 PM
Seriously? I've got very rough quotes for getting timing belt done, roughly $300 for the kit (seals etc) and roughly $200 (~3hrs) for the install.

He's quite happy to install stuff you obtain, if you can find the kit cheap.
George (can't remember the shop name), @ Salisbury, 3277 5007. Seems reliable from what I've heard.

But as I said, this is belt, don't know what's involved with chain, but I would have thought chain on a 4cyl would be easier than belt on a V6?
(Can't be bothered investigating the manual to figure out the differences...)

RoGuE_StreaK
16-11-2006, 01:15 PM
Hehe, just talked to George, asked the basic question, and got a 10min talk about the various versions of what might need to be done!:D

In a nutshell; purely chain, cheap. Like sub $200. But most commonly there are other things that must be done, and it heads more towards the $1K mark.

But it shows that he doesn't seem to bull**** about what you need, you can talk to him and he'll give it to you straight.

smooth2
16-11-2006, 01:55 PM
doing the timing chian only. then there's no point doing it cause 99% of the time it's the tenioners that have worn out .thats why in the kit u dont cogs, cos more than likely it's the tentioers. ive never come across one that needs chain only but i suppose anythings possible.
it's not a hard job just time comsuming.
first time i did it it took me a whole day. the second time on a mates car it took an afternoon.
but the main thing with doing the timing chains is u might as well change the oil pump and valve stem seals(comes in engine gasket kit).
only saying that cos on my mates car he wanted to keep it as cheap as possible, so he only got the timing chain kit. 4 weeks later it started to smoke ( valve stem seals)and off came the head again for 8 $2 stem seals:rant:. was a pian that could have been avoided if he did the pump seals and gaskets like i did in my tp.

now the thing is if ur only getting charged 600 id be worried that there cutting conrers. either that or ur good mates.
plus i don't take my car to mechanic's, cos the one time i did they ****ed it up and tried to tell me my control arm were already bent but i had degreased them the day be fore to check for any damage before i gave it to the mech. i got it back and was told it was sweet. so i drive around the corner and get up to 60klm and my tyres wre screaming going straight. told the mech and he said it was fine when it letf here, so i got on my stomach to have a look, thats when i saw both control arms were bent:rant: . they weren't like that before.

anyway cut it short i took it to a custom suspention place and they fixed it and i went back to him and got my money back.

so if u are paying under $1000 ask them exactly what there doing to ur car. also maybe the mech charge more up here in nrth QLD:D

M4DDOG
16-11-2006, 02:08 PM
That's true about just replacing the chain. My TR used to rattle when warm which i thought meant the chain was on it's way out. But when my mechanic did the valve seals he told me the chain was probably only about 30,000kms old. So yeh, i've heard the tensioners as well.

magnatism
16-11-2006, 03:01 PM
you have to be very wary of mechanics replacing ur timing chain. the process they use to cut corners is to break a link on ur chain then join the new one to it and turn the motor to feed the chain on, then sperate the chains and ur new one is now on. this is a quick and nasty way to do it. as the others have mentioned the tensioner needs to be done also and urs may not be self adjusting. also the chain guides can be worn and if one breaks like mine did ur engine will be ****ed very quickly. also the balance shaft chain needs to be done and any worn cogs like the oil pump one needs to be changed... coz at the age of the motors now these things will be worn.

also when i paid a mechanic to change the timing chain in mine, the new one did not stop the rattle as all of the other bits were still old and worn. he also put the cam timing out 2 teeth on the cam gear! i got charged $450 and got every cent back 2 days later when i had to get it fixed by someone else.

so just think its all well and good to save money but you are only saving it cos they are cutting corners which will lead to more damage later.

the full timing chains, guides and cogs kit costs $260 ish from repco and u should use everything in it. to do it properly you will need to drop the engine downwards a bit and take the head off if u want to do it properly. or alternatively take the engine out.
