i stopped by strathfield today for thier sale and spent what little money i had and bought a pair of pioneer TS-A6960E 6*9" speakers and some sub wiring for a grand total of $150. i'm wondering if people think these are some good speakers or not ... the wiring was pretty cheap but i'm not a huge bass fan and can live with it for now.

6 by 9's are a good cheap way to get a bit of bass with out spending the money, you can run them straight off your head unit. The bass sound good in the car, but you don't get the feel of the whole car shaking like with a sub or two.

ok ... instal complete :D :D :D :D sounds absolutly ausome even with the stock 6" ... just faded em out slightly so they shouldn't distort ... I was a touch sus about how good the quality of the upgrade would be compared to the original, but not i've decided that a set of $50 speakers would have been better ... and the pioneer are ausome.
now all i need to do is get an amp to run the sub and some 6"ers. My baby is now on her way, all i need now is a liscence

I actually just bought the same speakers a few days ago from Autobarn for $134.25, and installed them... I unfortunately found that the original magna covers hit the top of the speakers but not by much... I don't think anything will suffer from it.
The one thing is though that I have found that with the orginial tape cassette head unit (I know!... It will be going soon!!) the speakers are distorting pretty easily, I am not that cluey with all the stereo tech stuff but I was wondering if it is because the HU does not have a suitable amplifier for the speakers or the speakers aren't as good as I expected them to be (I was told they were good)... for anyone who can tell me if I have bought some cheap and nasties or some decent speakers here are the specs...
PIONEER TS-A6960E 6"x9" 3-way
MAX. 240W (NOM. 40W)
IMPP COMPOSITE CONE
Woofer 163mm x 237mm
66mm CONE MIDRANGE
tweeter 18mm DOME
IMPENDANCE 4 OHMS
SENSITIVITY 93 dB/W (1M)
Freq Response 28-28,000Hz
SHALLOW DEPTH BASKET
Now I just have to work out the rest of the system as I can afford it... I just saw the 6x9's and wanted better speakers but they are not much better at the moment :( .
Oh I have copied a pic of a wiring diagram for the original tape HU for anyone who might need /want it and a pic of the speakers...for whatever reason!

No dude it is definately the Cassette deck. I sampled my 6x9's off the deck before my old h/u was installed and they had great treble but no bass. Keep in mind your cassette unit is probably only giving them 5W MAX / channel and about 3WRMS / channel. The newer cd players are a little better with around 10-15WRMS / channel. Those 6x9's are by no means crap for the money.

I Just picked up the same speakers for 99 bucks from JB HiFi
very happy with them so far
Those speakers seem to be rather popular, I purchased a set from Autobarn a little while back while they had 20% off all Pioneer gear..
I was sooo tempted to get a set of splits too but i could not stretch the budget quite that far.
For a bit more light reading on how the amplifier inside you tape deck is struggling, see my comments in this post (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7864). :D

HA, good spotting, but that also sucks as Autobarn's were on a 'very special offer' - there I go, I broke one of my new rules (SHOP AROUND!!!)

Thats your idea of light reading? I'd hate to see your definition of a lengthy document.

yeah, fhrx is usually up to that....oh, look light reading, only 5 pages  but despite the lenght, at least by the end of it u learn something new...hopefully
aslo, impatience is a very large problem with a lot of ppl. u want the stuff now, but now all u can afford is boss, audioline, and whatever else they sell at strathfield. this applies to me too....i'm still in need of a decent front stage...and a rear stage to exist :D
