Could anyone give me an idea of what it would cost to put a timing belt in (reside South West, Sydney), and what else needs to be replaced during this process. such as belt tensioners, seals etc. I have a 94 verada 220000km's, also regading engine oil change what is the best oil to use, as lifters are getting a bit noisy....it only started 2 - 3 days ago and I last changed my oil in may, and did not use any engine flush...I have heard it is recommended to use this when changing oil also what brand is best for flushing the engine.
Thanks

Not too sure (I'm looking at this shortly too), but I think a kit costs something like $85, and getting someone to do it costs around the $400 mark. Well that's what I think I've been told.

Might also want to check the water pump while you're in there. You can get new ones on ebay for about $60.

Yes, sounds like a good idea........will check the prices and on ebay.....

Just out of curiosity, is it hard to change the sparkplugs on a KS verada, the rear platinum ones?

Hey mate... i was looking into the same for my 94 magna. first, im pretty sure veradas and magnas have internal timing chains, correct me if im wrong but im quite sure. i called around a few places and got between 700 and 1100 for the whole chain, tensioners, bearings etc to be chained. If u change the chain u gotta change heaps of stuff with it. If you know a mechanic or car buff get them to do it or you'll be majorly ripped.

that sound u got, if its a rattling sound, its your tappets. i have the same problem atm and gettin it fixed soon. best to change ur oil and oil filter, maybe ur fuel filter as well. yeh get ur leads and plugs changed 2. put a thicker oil in, a 20-50W will work fine, better for the older models. the thicker the better for a car like urs.

when it comes to cars... its not what you know, its who you know :D

ok ur wrong:D now seriously. ur talking about the astron II (4 cly, timing chain and counter balance chain)
and he's asking about the v6 (timing belt)

to get a mech to do it is about 1000 bucks. it's not a hard job just fidely and labour some. now the ebay kit is for the 4cly $99 not sure on the v6's but don't only look and the auctions cause alot of the ebay stores stock kits for our magnas eg. ringwood auto- he has alot of things for us but he dosen't know a thing about them. so if u don't know what u need then u'll never get a proper answer out of him. but if u know what u want then it's all sweet. i got poly bushes off him . but his prices are good. im sure there's members on hear that have a manual incase u want to save money and do it urself.

If your doing your timing belt best to do the water pump only about another $80 for that and front seals $10. As for labour most mechanics alow up to 4 hours worth of labour to do this job, Just depends on how quick they are, so if the charge say $55 an hour you should be looking at 220 max for labour plus your parts. Best to go to an independant mechanic, mitsubishi charge like wounded bulls.

Sorry to threadmine a bit, but i just have a general question not worthy of its own thread.

Just put the timing belt back on my V6 Maggie (had to do cam seal as it popped out!) and so far all the notches are lined up besides the rear one which seems to be about 1/4 of a notch out.

Is this the best i can get it or do they all have to be 100% underneath each respective notch.
It looks so damn close but im not going any further until my mech comes round to have a look at it (so in the meantime ill ask here)

So yeah its literally on the end of the notch but not 100% in the middle of it, the other cam and oil pump notch is fine

Sounds about right, the belt has just stretched a bit.

I turned it by hand and it did 2 full rotations without hesitations...

So should be right, im just still paranoid about starting the car without having a mechanic look at it first.
Also scraped off some 14 year olf dirt from underneath the car, this should soon have one of the cleanest underbodys on a 2nd gen!

(yes i do have nothing else better to do on a saturday night)

dude if all the marks lined up when you took it off then they should all line up when putting it on again. a belt doesnt stretch while its off the car lol

Belt stretch that much means a new belt is needed. Also if you are using the belt again, make sure it is rotating the same direction.

If ANY oil got on the belt replace it.

I do these for $120.00 plus parts, I will not replace a belt if the seals are not being replaced, will tell you to take the car elsewhere. Water pump is optional, if the pump is ok and the belt is tensioned correctly you will not have the pump fall apart 10000k's later despite popular belief. If there is ANY doubt however I do suggest replacement

thats what my mechanic said about the water pump. Mine was spotlessly clean and in good working order thanks to good regular coolant servicing. He didnt bother replacing it

Water pump, Dizzy cap, Rotor button, Alt Belt, A/C belt, lash adjusters and all seals were replaced when doing the heads (just letting you know)

I think becuase i hosed down the engine bay 2 days ago is the reason it wont even ****** turn over.
Just spent 4 hours puttin crap back together and installing some stuff.
Damn i am pissed off at this moment in time
