So i plant my foot and feel the power of my rada ... then i back off early for what ever reason and the tranny decides that neutral is the best option at 60+kms/hr  ... i have to take my foot off the pedal and wait a sec for it to click back in ..
Doesnt happen all the time but one time i didnt realise (cornering with loud music) until it was too late and the tranny slammed into gear at 4g :(
Anyone else got this? is it new tranny time?

Happens to me too, but from experience I've deduced that it's just the old school automatic gearbox trying to deal with difference between the previous throttle position and the new one, and struggling to find a solution as to what gear it should be in. I take off at the lights quite fast, and I usually catch up to the person in front of me, i back off the throttle, it gears up then gears down, makes for a nice pleasant ride :P
(perhaps there is a mechanic out there who could advise us on the actual technical aspects..?)

When was the last time you guys had your auto's serviced? My old TR was doing it, had the fluid replaced and fixed the problem completely.

not sure the history on my machine but maybe its worth doing anyways. Its a fairly cheap operation i thought. It's only when i back off after thrashing it and not every time. Any recommendations for a place in Perth to do it?

spot on, make sure you use the mitsubishi transmission fluid if you do it yourself.
If it dosent fix the problem, it usually means the whole box is getting old

Nothing like doing it yourself :D. Buy about 4-5L of mitsubishi tranny fluid, there's a write up on the forums round here somewhere, it's not hard at all to do (hey if i can do it, anyone can!).
And yeh, as Russian said, if it doesn't fix the problem (should make it better though) then your transmission is on it's way out.

If I take my foot rite off at about 5k in 1st then apply power again the revs climb up a bit and I get a quick surge when it changes into 2nd, feels like hardcore manual shifting.

As long as it's a fairly smooth surge and not a WHACK THUD surge, then that's normal, in fact, that's what my driving instructor told me to do when you want to change gears in an auto.

If the car revs out and dosent go no where, it means one of the bands has come off, this usually happens on the O/D button.

My neutral reving thing only happens for a split second and i just take my foot of the gas for a sec then plant it again. Only happens if i back off from holding a gear out.
I read somewhere that you should only use O/D when going over 70kms/hr so as not to wear out the O/D. is this true?

Correct, it should only be on over 80kms/hr to preserve fuel amounts

Just to preserve fuel or does it help to save wear on the tranny?

Get a service kit, and a couple of bottles of fluid (flush the tranny twice) and read up on how to adjust your bands to specs. Or if not, get your bands adjusted by a pro.

Yeah it does sound as though its a band adjustment, not that I'm an expert but from what I've heard about other cars with auto's with the same problem.
The transmission is often neglected with servicing, aren't they supposed to get done once a year (well 2 years is a more realisitic figure)? Its more the fact that they're a pain in the butt I guess! I guess leaving the transmission too long would be like driving 60,000+km before your next service!

Mate it dosent hurt to do the transmission fluid twice a year and get it checked...
Its one of the most important parts of the car, if you learn to do the oil yourself it it alot easier on the wallet. Plus eventually you start picking up on things, eg: the colour of the oil, brown/burnt means problems, tiny flakes means problems, no oil means problems - its good to learn all this
Band are bands, they wear thin , they get corroded. Dosent matter how much you adjust them sometimes they need to be replaced, the good thing is this can be done without removing the whole transmission.
Knowing how to read the transmission and all of its gears is good aswell, so you know if a gear goes missing/plate is damaged

correct. if used under 70 klms you will wear out the overdrive clutch alot quick leaving u with 3 gears untill u put an overdrive clutch kit in it.
