I've reciently purchased a 2002 TJ Advance - however it has only come with one key.

Im guessing that only Mitsu dealers can provide new keys (at a cost, obviously) and they will want some sort of proof that you own the vehicle before handing over new keys?

What you need to do is just get your current key cut, can be from most lock smiths, then you need to go to mitsubishi and they'll reprogram the key to your car.

Haven't yet found a locksmiths who stocks blanks for Mitsu yet;
Commodes & Furds always.

They all say its cheaper to go direct to Mitsu and order it with your VIN.

Just don't let the Mitsu dealer charge you to reprogram them - it's very easy to do yourself, and has been documented elsewhere in these forums.

Cheers,
Martin.

you will need a genuine mitsi key, as they need have encoded chips in them.

not sure how people outside of mitsi can program keys.

Theres a guy near me that has them, but you need to go to mits to get the key coded.

did you buy your car from a dealership or was it a private sale?

nope no can do

you need access to the dealer's MUT-II computer to get the car immobiliser to recognise the new key

talked mine into doing it for $20

Just to clear up:
You CANNOT program your own KEY
You CAN program your REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY FOB

Check ebay for the remote and sometimes the blank key.
I saved roughly $30 on the new remote.

Also, check which key you need. If your current key has grey plastic, you'll need to buy the "master" (black plastic) key, if you ever want to lock your glovebox. If not, you'll probably sve some bucks just buying the service key.

buy a new key through mitsu spares.. they can get it through the vin as mentioned! it will come from adelaide , and all should be good, as long as nobody has changed the locks/barrel before. offer the service department 20 bucks cash to code it, they normally accept easy beer money!

The Black keys are your normal keys
The Grey key is your Valet Key (you know for when you lock all your valuables in the glove box and have the valet park your car)

I'll give my local Mitsu dealer a ring next week

I find a lot of the cars that are auctioned by govt agencies usually only come with 1 key.
The rentalcar firms otoh are usually better organised and they keep track of all keys.

Grey key does not open the boot either.

Glad i read this thread, I just realised the key I got with the car is the valet key. I cant open the boot with it either. Does that mean I need to buy a new boot lock coded to my valet key?

You got jibbed man. I'd go back and ask for the proper car key. I only got one key and one remote keyless entry buzzer when I bought my car, but I haggled them for a week or so and got another key and remote entry buzzer for free.

If the place i got it from was still in business I would.

So I see, the Key for TJ onwards are different from the TE-TF where remotes can be program easily.

I think car manufacturers do this deliberately to enforce that we need to go back to them once in a while.

I just bought a TJ Series 2 Wagon and it only has 1 key and 1 remote, I rang up Marion Locksmith and they told me it would cost $130 for a new key would this cost less if I got it from Mitsubishi and would it be the same, also do i need a spare remote as I can still unlock the car with the key and start the car up?

best bet would be to get the key from mitsubishi as they need to encode it to the car
should be about the same price
the remote is up to you, personally i would have a spare set of both
you can pick up the remotes cheaply from ebay and encode them yourself

My car only came with 1 key and no remote. Paid $85 for the key from mitsu (including cutting and programming while I waited in their nice coffee shop) and $50 for the remote on eBay. Remote is a simple program-it-yourself job.

$85 sounds cheap what city was that in?

Penrith, just along Castlereagh Road.
