I've recently purchased an Alpine ZR 12" woofer in a ported bandpass box...
took out my old JBL GT1000 (in a sealed box i built myself). the alpine does not sound as tight as the sealed jbl on the mild bass notes, it sounds chuffy if you know what i mean. but on those deep notes, wow, the ported sounds awesome.
i've played around with the crossover and it's starting to sound a bit better, is it my amplifier settings?, or is a sealed box going to give a cleaner bass note??
if i can get the ported one to sound better, i'll permanantly install it, if not, i'll be putting the trusty JBL back in
your thoughts???

Laymans terms:

Ported box=big bang lots of bass
Sealed box=tighter bass cleaner sound (my preference)

Well a badly designed ported box may result in that. Try stuffing the port with some dacron or other light material. But what order bandpass is it? Can you see the driver?

here is a picture of it.. i can access the front chamber to put dacron in if needed (the ports are in the front chamber anyway...

oh, I'm not surprised its boomy. A bandpass box is very efficient at producing a small range of frequencies determined by the driver/box volume and port tuning. Thats why it seems to only play one note. Still try some stuffing as a first go. Otherwise a different box may be in order.

lol, yeah bandpass are good for a small frequency range.....but personally i don't think they're as versatile as a ported box. Funny thing, the 'darcon' fluffy stuff i stapled to the inside of my box is sticking out thru the port. I found some old pillows I had no need for, so i ripped them up into strips and stapled them into the inside of the box. Now, some parts of it are in the PVC pipe port I have...its trying to escape! lol

i got 2 zr's in a sealed box. I just made a new box so it sounds a hell of a lot punchier and tighter then the old one, what model zr do you have?

that would have been my next question, if i build a sealed box for it instead, what's the volume of the box required for 1 woofer.
the model is a SWR-3040
i don't have the specs, did a search on google but could not find any info...

Is it a 10, 12 or 15 inch sub?

Edit: Just read first post- and a 30L/30cm2 box should do you just fine, if you wish to go sealed.

I might be able to save myself some work...
Jaycar has a prefab carpeted box of 18mm MDF but the internal volume is only 28L for $49.00 (bargain!!!)
is that going to be ok?
