Hi, I am about to buy another first gen magna. The seller told me the CV joints may need to be replaced, and I have absolutely no idea what that is  . So my question, what are CV joints??
Also there's a slight "squeek" when you turn the wheel, anyone knows what that can be? I don't think it will be something serious because the car has only 89,000k. It's a TP manual, are those manual gear boxes a bit relyable?
thanks!

CV joins join the gear box to the front wheels while allowing you to turn your wheel.
manuals are pretty good from what I have ehard.

Oh, that's interesting, he mentioned the CV joints of the rear wheels, is that possible?

No, sounds like you need to get a new mechanic.
Unless you have a magic 1st gen that is... One that turns with the rear wheels.

:bowrofl: That's a good one! No, he's clearly not a mechanic, but this guy is the current owner of the car :) He probably has heard the word "CV joint" somewhere (like me) and tried to make an interesting remark :D

Get a real mechanic to check out the car first.

The squeak in the steering wheel seems fairly normal with the first gen magnas.. in cold mornings mine squeaks heaps as i turn the wheel, but goes silent after a while. I think it's only the contacts for the horn as far as I can tell...

I take it the squeek is coming from the inside of the car? Its probably some dust inside the stearing, it should be able to be cleaned.
When a CV joint needs replacing, it will make a knocking/clicking? (can anyone explain that better) sound when you are turning mostly (or accelerating). It may be faint so you need the window down etc.
If its not making any noise like that then it may be something else. Given that the car has only done 89,000 (assuming it hasn't been wound back or not reading correctly), then the CV joints should last a while yet!
How much do people normally get out of a CV joint? isn't it normally 200,000+ km for an average Magna driven 'normally'?

the squeak- does it sound like an old door closing softly by any chance.
if so my tp had the same noise. it stopped when i replaced the lower ball joints and tie rod ends( mech parts for your steering).
so there probably worn and could do with changing.
cv's just think of it as a diff for front wheel drive cars. cv's are the drive shafts for FWD cars, they just happen to be at the front of the car as well as the gearbox (which is to the left of the engine).
oh yeah before i forget. if the cv's are making noise eg. clicking ,grinding etc etc then they need replacing. they only make noise when there past the point of fixing. thats why if you maintain ur car very well, u'll notice the split in the boot of the cv joint and replace the boots and grease before they start making noise and need replacing.

The squeek sounds comes from the inside of the car, and does indeed sound a bit like the squeek of a door, but not as loud, just a very soft squeek.
I noticed, when doing 100k/h on the motorway, that the car seems to bounce a bit, it becomes a bit shaky and I don't think it's inbalanced wheels, but I'm not sure. Anyone knows what that can be?

that squeak u mention a 110klm from inside sounds like what i get.and i think it's the interior plastic rubbing when the shell of the car flex's. and i think it's the b pillar plastic . so i guess u couuld always pull out ur interior and give all the plasic mating sufaces a light sand with wet and dry or somthing similar. the squeak for me is so small that ive never bothered but thats the only noise i have.
also when i put new tyres on i got a vibration thruogh the tp at over 100kays. took it to a suspenion place cos id just had some work done there, but when they check it they found that one of my new tyres had runout (like a flat spot) . back to the tyre shop and it was changed.
other things it could be ( hard to know unless we can drive it and or see it) brakes might be slighly warped and might need machining.
or worn struts or springs or spring insulators. could be worn suspenion bushes. could be alot of thing need a liittlke more info or it's like shooting in the dark.

I was actually referring to 2 separate things :).
1) a squeak of the steering wheel (at any speed)
2) When doing 100k/h on the motorway, that the car becomes a bit shaky and seems to bounce slightly. This is not always, it appears and also disappears, very strange.... My older TN magna doesn't have that...

That's good advice, I will check those tyres, you could be right they can have a partially flat surface.
