Ok 2nite on flinders street i did a u turn and gave it a bit of throttle and to my dismay it made one hell off a griding noise so i pulled over and checked things out. Now whenever i try to move it it just makes one hell sick grinding noise in every gear, i am thinking diff:cry: ne chance it is a cv or something, it sounds like the cv shaft may have come out but i wont c till i get to townsville next i got it towed to my work. has this happened to ne one and can i get an app price on a mitsubishi diff fitted. the rpw lsd are $1590 hoping it wont be that dear. My car is a th 3.5l manual. ne thoughts??
btw only 94 000kms

cv joint would be making a clunking or clacking or clicking noise..

if its only when u turn around corners, theres a good chance its only the cv's... which arent very expensive to replace.

chances are, it isnt the diff.. if u have been taking care of the car, it shouldnt be damaged so soon.

u might have to wait till u get the car checked out before u know what it is

manual wagons for the win!

Did you notice any oil dripping anywhere?

If it was the CV, i was thinking it could have popped outta the g'box, but then you'd at least have some sort of oil leakage etc.

Is the grind the same kinda grind when you miss a gear..?

crap, i didnt read that part!

hm.. sounds bad dude!.. too many reverse doughies! lol

hopefully its nothin to serious..

Replacing the diff is expensive, if ur going to replace it, ur better off buying the lsd.
Or if your strapped for cash, try and source out another whole gearbox and replace it with yours. would end up being cheaper.

it took me 2 months just to find a smashed up th to the this motor and gearbox out of and the noise aint like when u grind a gear it just sounds sick. and also about the reverse doughies never done one in the magna use to in the pulsar but never in the magna and the only time i ever do burnouts is at the drags to warm the tires. i keep my car in good condition only just got the cv,s replaced 2000kms ago and no leakage so im guessing diff:( also im wondering can i take the diff centre out of a tf 3.0 litre auto??

hehe.. well, thats a shame, you can trash some cars to the floor and they keep going forever.. and when u take care of another car, it buggers up on you!

ive heard that you can take the diff out of an auto and use that, but you have to modify some things to get it to work..

choonga was lookin into this recently.. he knows more.

Gerard
02-11-2006, 01:07 AM
well it is more of a 'transmission specialist' kinda area i suppose, rather than just a general mechanical problem..

if that makes u feel any better

Bugger..

I reckon the best bet would be the LSD!

If you're lucky enough to find a wrecked manual RalliArt.. steal the LSD off one of them or.. RPW is your next pitstop!

Check out that thread..

All the info you could ask for..

Probably be your best bet to go for the Cusco LSD.. slightly more agressive and slightly harder wearing!

It hasnt just broken engine mounts in a really bad way has it? This might cause the gear selector to be out of wack and not selecting gears (ie half engaged). Will the car move under its own power at all even with the griding noise?

ready88
02-11-2006, 08:40 AM
yer the engine mount at the front of the motor is busted i just got a block of nyolathane bout to get machined up and pressed into the mount. and yer the car will sort of pull ie still move but only just havnt tryed moving it to much cause of the noise

good to hear. how much is it gonna set u back

GoTRICE
02-11-2006, 11:44 AM
thats good to hear mate, if you ever break your diff i'd just be adding that an lsd would cost alot more than buying a replacement gearbox and fitting. Also from my knowledge when the magna diff goes the gearbox to driveshaft seals usually go spilling alot of oil.

ready88
02-11-2006, 02:52 PM
its gonna end up costing bout $85 for the outer joint and half an hour labour at townsville cv shafts( bob uren motors) so roughly $100 plus the tow truck and fuel for my mate to give me a lift 100km home from where my car broke down:D not 2 bad coulda been worse

Thanks for the help fellaz

Ring around some of teh wreckers in sydney and post a Want to Buy add in the Wanted/For Sale section. Also speak to some off the real hardcore knowhow guys on the site EZ Boy, Barry etc they may know where you could get one. Failing that you may have to go down the more expensive road. If you do bargain the hell out of the product and do the sympathy not much money routine you may get a deal.

It happens to us all dude. I was on the middle of Kangaroo Valley pass and a wheel flew of the car. Was screwed on but stripped the tread and came off. If i hadn't been goin slow would have relocated the car to the bottom of the gorge. Cost over $4000 :swearing: by the time everything was paid for and replaced.

It's strange that you've been told its the diff... that would spew oil all over the joint if it went. I had the exact same thing happen to me in my old TR... It was a snapped driveshaft. Only bout $800 all up (inc labour). Never do burnouts in an auto magna!! lol
But seriously, i would make sure that this guy isnt trying to bend you over and do you...
