I would like to remove the towbar on my 98 TF. Can someone give me an overview on what's involved? I'm not a mechanically minded person so I'm not sure if I should just get a mechanic to do this when I go for a service.

* Jack rear end up on car stands..
* Drop muffler down by removing rubber mounts (1 at rear, 2 in front of muffler) use big ass screwdriver to lever rubber mount, and remove heatshield above muffler (a few bolts 8mm from memory)
* Undo clips holding plastic bumper to metal braces, and bend braces down.
* Undo 4 bolts holding towbar on - may also be another one in middle into spare tyre well. (not sure - I am going off an aftermarket one I installed on my TL)
*Remove towbar, may be a little tricky getting in out from behind the plastic bumper, but should be achievable.
* Refit 4 bolts that were holding towbar on. (2 either side)
* Refit heatshield and muffler.
I would recommend a friend to help - as it will be easier with 2 people.

Why do you want to remove it?
They provide awesome protection.

they also make it look silly if its there for no reason, and if you havnt got a boat or a caravan theres no point, yeah if some1 nudge you from behind less damage or if you reversed only leaves a tow bar dent in the other persons car:P so no evidence that it was youlol cos theres no paint from your car on theres:bowrofl:
i rekon magnas look way cooler wit out towbars, unless you got a trailer on the bak wit subwoofas blastin would look the goodslol

And if you werent in WA, I'd make an offer on the towbar, probably would have given you a hand to get it off.

I live in Sydney. How much is your offer? My magna is due for a major service and I've decided to get my mechanic to remove it for me.

If you want to take your tow bar off do what I did then next best thing, instead of taking all the tow bar stuff off from underneath your car just take the tongue of it off and then try and hide the wiring underneath the rear of your car. P.S if your tow bar has been on there for a long time, get someone to help you because those bolts would have rusted on very well.
Good Luck :D

I recently ran into the same dilemma, getting the whole bar off is a HUGE pain if you have never worked on a car before. Ended up ringing around to see if I could get a towbar place to do it.
Lowest quote was $50 bucks but they didn't realise how hard it was gonna be until I got there. Just before they were about to drop the muffler the guy came in and asked if I wanted the entire thing off or just hidden.
They ended up taking the tounge off in seconds flat with a power ratchet then hid the wiring. Already had the clip painted so that went straight on, now cant tell I ever had a towbar without looking under the car. If I ever want to put it back on will be an easy job, paid em 5 bucks and I was on my way. Recommend this course of action unless you wanna sell the bar.

Well if you ever want to put it back on all you have to do is to take off the bit of plastic and put the tongue back on then just attach the electrical thing back to the body work........... But make sure if you do put the tongue back on make sure that it is put back on very tightly or if you ever tow something, you might just see it moving off ever so slowly in you rear vision mirror, NOW you don’t want that do you. lol

Best just to take off the extension with the ball on it, you cant really notice the rest under the car. Don't do the electrics though, I've lost my boot release and the cars lights dont flash when i turn on and off the alarm, it's a real pain in the ass.

I think you need a slightly different on for AWD's. I saw ages ago mitsu has a different model for AWDs. Mine non-geniune (but installed by mistubishi dealer I bought it from  ), not sure its any different
