Hi guys,
Ive seen it mentioned on here but dont actually know how its done. I really dont wanna put 6X9's in the back of my car so want to put 6 or 6.5 inchers in the factory location on the rear shelf. I saw something about mdf spacers or baffles but no detailed instructions.
Thanks in advance!
anthony

i've got some 6.5 coaxials in my parcel shelf
they used a mdf spacer the turns the hole into 6.5 diameter and screws done where the 6x9's were
should be able to go down to your local audio shop and pick up a set

I have 6.5" in the rear as well..

Make your own spacer out of 12mm MDF!!..

Cut a rectangular shape big enough to cover the existing hole of the factory 6x9"... Use the pre-drilled holes of the factory 6x9" to hold your MDF down.. Once that is done.. come in from the boot and mark underneath your MDF the 6x9" opening.

You can then take out the MDF to cut the hole to suit your 6.5" ..making sure this is done in the middle of the MARKED area of the 6x9" opening.

It should not take you long..

Hey...

indeed, I have the same splits in the front and rear... if you're using subs.. there's no need to have 6x9" as you might be aware... and the sound quality is far better also...

yeah mates thats right
if your going to buy a sub then theres no need for 6x9's
the money you save on buying the 6.5 instead of the 6x9's can go towards a better amp for your sub and also a decent sub to match :D

why is there a headunit on the backshelf? in that picture above

Mr_Roberto

thats not a h/u mate
its there for controlling the amps
also make you able to connect upto 8 amps to run off that unit and set them up and everything just from that unit
its a good bit of gear :D

So what is that unit called? And what brand is it? And is it legal to cut into your parcel shelf or does it not really matter?

its an alpine RUX-4280
you can put this thing anywhere you like but if you wanna put it in your parcel shelf well if theres not any cutting the parcel shelf involved then you should be fine

I heard from someone cutting the parcel shelf is illegal, not sure why though. Maybe something to do with weakening the support for baby seats or something - I have no idea about those I haven't needed to use one yet!

yes cutting up the parcel shelf is illegal because it weakens the strenght of the parcel shelf but if you get a engineers report done on it and it passes then all should be sweet

bit of an odd place to mount the RUX! i'm getting mine in the dash soon enough hopefully.

i also made up some MDF spacers to mount my 5" polyglass focals, (coaxial versions of the front splits) very simple as the others have described.

i used 12mm then routed the speaker in 5mm so it sat flush (not a massive amount of room for the tweeter otherwise)

definately dont go larger than 12mm, next size down would probably be easier again.

Cutting into the actual parcel shelf is not illegal.... CUTTING INTO THE METAL UNDER YOUR PARCEL SHELF IS ILLEGAL as it is part of the chassis and as some else said, it actually weakens the chassis in case of a rear impact, putting your rear passengers in danger.

apart from that....I have reinforced the parcel shelf by glueing a thin piece of MDF (5mm) under it to get rid of the flimsiness and be able to mount my tweeters and my sub amp controller.

You can modify or cut into the that piece of trim as long as you don't cut into the metal

The reason why i mounted the RUX there was so that i didn't have to run yet another thick wire under the carpet and i did not have to modify anything in the dash or centre console to make room for the chunky controller..

If you would like to use your existing grills with a 12mm MDF spacer you might have to change the screws on your grill to longer ones as i have done.
