hey all. been doin a lil browsing in my engine bay concerning the induction method. ive got a KN panel filter in the airbox and been wondering how i can improve it. thought about POD but dont like the swirling and heat effect.. heres what i did.
ok this first experiment was fully homebrand... i unbolted the bottom half of the airbox and induction path and jst took it off. used Duct tape and shoelaces to hold the panel filter to the top (yeh yeh like i said homebrand). so i took her for a drive down my street... holy crap she sounds like a WRX!!! breathes 50 times better and accelerates faster! i was very surprised and impressed. i showed a mate of mine n he laughed straight away jst by looking at it. he said and i quote "man i'll give you $20 if that sounds any better" well im $20 richer hehe. what im doin now to make it look decent is this.
taking the bottom half of the airbox and removing the bottom and the bottle neck part, definately keeping the engine facing wheel of the box as a heat shield. then comes the cai. all im doin is gettin some air piping from supercheap and directing it directly behind my grille and clamping it in place. then ill clamp it right underneath the remainder of the airbox. i thought of cutting the box into a decent shape to adapt to the hose but then id lose the nice growl i get without the box.
so there you have it.
a CAI that sounds like a WRX. enjoy and let me know what u think or if u have any better ideas.

nice work brother. some ppl have left the airbox in and cut a hole and run a pvc pipe down under the bumper so as to feed extra cold air into the air box also

All im searching for is some heatproof pipe....the one from super cheap is super crap and autobarn have the same thing...

now i have a reallllly dumb idea
I wonder if you could cut the bottem out of the air box and drill holes in the wheel arch (inside guard) and some how seal the box to the guard mmmmmmmmmmmm real cold air and lots of it

Yeh i know what u mean. i thought about the plumbing PVC piping, but it looks so dodge unless u can cover it up properly. there are the chrome steel pipes at supercheap that are better, the 90 and 180 angled pipes are theo nly ones on display tho, u can order custom ones in i work there so i can get whatever i want :D.
there is a heatproof spraypaint or just heatproof spray that may work. ill keep looking around n see what i can find. likewise if u find anything let us know ay. but not matter what piping you get... you cant go past that growl...
copodane, dont do the wheelarch idea  , what u can do is this. put ur battery where ur airbox is coz under the battery is a section separated from the wheelarch, its right behind ur front bumper, theres some nice cool air there 2

yeh what im doin with the bottom half of the box sounds similar to a pod but much better. coz theres a larger amount of volume and area that the panel can suck in, and theres no swirling effect, alot easier for the air to be sent through the inlet pipes without swirling.
im still using the back of the box as a heatshield like i said. its harder to make a heat shield for a pod. im cutting back the bottom of the box, using the back as a shield and the rest to still be able to clamp the filter on without it looking homebrand. so yes it sounds similar to a pod filter setup, but in theory and reality, much better. and i thought of it myself! im so proud :D . either way, pod or this setup is better than a normal box, coz u got a big box sucking through a tiny pipe. its a massive bottleneck effect.

i said it was a dumb idea but wouldnt a pipe do the same thing suck in water and dirt etc?

yes but alot less. for a start your tyre will throw up dirt, water, gravel sand and everything else you can think of. like magnatism said, your filter will be screwed in no time.
if you put a pipe behind the grille or bumper, theres alot less crap flying up into the pipe thus you get alot more life from it. if you wanted, you could be really special and put a filter at the opening of your pipe and see how that works out?

ok i started my little custom project today. i changed my plans a little. i drilled a 3 inch hole down through the engine bay leading into the space in front of the wheelarch and right behind the bumper (only to find that holes in ur engine bay is illegal but whats done is done). i realised there was not enough room to fit the pipe behind either grille or the bumper so i changed my plan to that ^. The advantage of this is i can use the crappy piping from supercheap coz all im doin is piping through the whole which is beside the battery and the engine bay wall where its alot cooler compared to next to the block. next, ill be buying a cheap TFI pod filter from supercheap along with the hose and chrome 90 degree piping. then ill be cutting out an oval shaped hole just before the corner of my front bumper, then meshing it. from here ill customise my airbox and setup the piping from the box to under the bumper. then ill attach the pod filter. (the pod is just for minor filtering coz its so cheap)
when its all ddone, the pod filter behnd the bumper will suck in the cool air from in front of the car send it up the tube and into the panel filter to the TB.
im liking how its all going so far and will keep you all updated.
let me know what u guys think cheers

I have the panel hooked up to ribbed 80mm cheapo cai
Firstly in terms of fluid mechanics the smallest part of the system is the biggest draw back, ie its like a limiting factor, thats why your 11km t/b wont really make a difference if its much bigger than everything else, just an eg.
2ndly there's a thing called gravity therefore i dont think you'll find rocks or other objects hitting your filter. You might find dirt in dust form will dirty it a bit quicker but nothing drastic. My filter has been wet once ie i could feel a minute amount of water on it and it was ridiculously raining, ie 40km/h on the highway and most of the rain was a mist as it was humid too. I have on no other occasion of rain had it get wet.
Also it's your maf sensor that doesnt like the swirling, it's especially effected as its right after the filter.
If you have cut metal the structural integrity of the front end of your car may be lowered ie could fail easier in a crash, it's also not a bull**** law like pod filter equals fire... that's why it is illegal couldnt tell you whether is would be dangerous or not without seeing it.
peace out

thanx for the comment. xept i didnt get what u said at the start...
yeh rocks dont usually fly up butbugs and sand and dust and other crap does so i thought it might be useful but rain was the main concern; if i just had an open pipe rain and water could easily get in at least through the opening. but like you said a pod will restrict most water gettin in.
cutting the metal: yeh i thought it may compromise the structural strength, althought there were a number of empty bolt holes in the area that i removed so guessed that wouldve been the best place to cut out.
not sure what u mean by "it's also not a bull**** law like pod filter equals fire" . ive filed and smoothed it down nicely so at least it doesnt look 2 homebrand
ill have some pix up soon of what ive done when its all complete. but keep the comments coming...

nah ive never found bugs or sand up mine, just dust makes it a bit dirtier, i will say mines not a direct route to the filter as of yet, i'll be changing it in my huge amount of holidays (3months god bless uni). I doubt water will trouble you much, if the filter still sits in the stock position.
Ok bull**** law; not allowed an exposed pod in your exgine bay as apparently the oil vapours are susceptible to fires...
Not bull**** law; you cut the bracing in your front bar and it can fail badly in a crash, not necessarily causing harm to you but might cause your engine to be ****ed in a minor accident.

yeh ok. im havin different ideas of just fitting a hose behind the bumper grille instead of cutting and meshing and just forgetting the pod filter all together since ive already got the panel filter in the box.
hmm never heard that pod filter law, its pretty stupid, theres fumes everywhere...
have heard of the second law u mentioned. if it doesnt work out i can just get my mate to weld a plate of it or weld a matching shape into the existing hole. anyways ill hopefully hav it done soon, gotta wait til im paid, but ill have some more updates, infop and pix up soon.
thanx mate

1) i want to see NOW!!!
2) i want to run my Pod to the front bumper, the 2nd gen air intake usually goes out from the TB, turns left, then turns right into the MAF
basically i want it to go left from the TB Straight down to the bumper, missing this battery s**t
possible?

lol all i can show u now is a big hole i still need to buy the parts. hav a look in ur bay where ur battery is. i took the battery out, the airbox and all and had a look for a decent spot to drill.
where ur battery case is, between that and the engine bay wall there were three empty bolt holes so i drilled them out about 3 inches wide..
alternatively you CAN go around the battery, away from the block, and down but from there im not too sure where you can find the way to the bumper, il have another look and show you what ive done so far.
my hole goes straight down behind the bumper, this is where it gets interesting coz there are a number of options...
1) cut hole in bumper, mesh it and setup pod filter behind it.
2) setup pod filter slighty below bumper. this means no cutting of bumper.
3) forget pod filter all together and setup the piping so it sits just behind the precut part of the bumper.
note: u can use the crappy supercheap piping coz u aint goin anywhere near the block, thus alot less heat. besides ur only in the engine bay for a few inches.
im assuming u dont wanna do any of this battery drilling work. by not doing this you would need to find another pathway away from the heat. i tried a few different places, behind the grille, behind the bumper, under the radiator, but neither were suitable. the first 2 because there was no access to the bumper or grille, and the last because there was nowhere to mount the pod and even if you could it would've been too hot.
anyone else got ideas?

You cut your front bumper?!
Are you going for ghetto styling or something?

Try and colour code the mesh and 'mould' it to match the bumper lines. ie - see how your bumper curves under and forms a lip.. Try and replicate that through your cut. Smooth out your cuts on the bumper to.. They look rough.
Also, move your cai pipe up a bit, it sticks out below the bumper.
