View Full Version : TH Running Rough

I have a 99 TH Auto over the last couple of months it shudders when doing between 60 and 80 when going up a slight rise if I lock it into third it seems to stop, I had the Auto serviced and it has made no difference.

Now when I'm driving at any speed it seems to me missing or chuging every now and again, anyone else had or is having a similar problem, could it be the transmission is stuffed, spark plug leads breaking down causing a miss, or something else any help would be great. :(

yeah my th isnt running as smooth as it should...i reckon its just general maintenance that needs to be carried out. plugs, leads, oil

It depends. You should be able to tell between the engine and the gearbox.

If the engine is missing you should really be able to feel it. It will be a solid shudder. If you’re dropping and gaining power it might be the leads or plugs.

If its a power problem like a pull / drop and it happens on a rough surface it could the gearbox.

First step take it to a good service place that can do a full engine diagnostic. Should be able to tell you if it’s the leads or plugs and wont cost much money.

I should add mine is doing the same.

I'm taking it on a trip to Newcastle next week (who wants to buy me a beer?) to see how it goes. When I return I should be just under my 5,000K warrenty.. So I'm going to make them fix it.

I took my car to an auto trans place for there thoughts and when he saw the car he said to me right away, "98 or 99 Magna hey, get ready for a new gear box".

i thought the gearboxes on these cars were sposed to be pretty strong now? i read a writeup somewhere about these gearboxes and they were raving about how strong they were and how they were able to tow a caravan without an oil cooler blah blah..?

My 99 KH has exactly the same problem with the gearbox, my soloution is simple, just drive around in third gear around town till you hit a 80k zone then just slot it into top gear, Service manager at a Mitsubishi dealer told me this, you can't fix it it's just the way it is unfortunately (my old TN Elite was the same and it lasted over 200k when i sold it). I also do get some surging at 3500+rpm but am pretty sure it's just dirty injectors.

my TH 3.5L auto likes to shift itself into neutral at times, most notably when going upslopes. then i have to either shift to 2 or 1, or tap onto the gas until the gear wakes up and engages again, doing so with a pretty ugly jerk. i notice this happens mostly when the engine's not fully warmed up. a mechanic that serviced my car last year told me that magnas had a very poorly designed gearbox and it's pretty weak. and i've had other mechanics around brisbane tell me that as well. so, don't believe what you read in articles... those guys are bribed by mitsu or wanking when doing the articles. any idea how much a new auto gearbox costs?

I aint reading articles or nething mate! I own a magna...my parents have for the last 6yrs. My obervations are made by myself!

Ask these mechanics when was the last time the actually cheacked out a magna box.

Ill easily say its one of the better boxs around...alot smoother then most other family sized cars...by ease!

yeh i know that the early TM series gearboxes were absolutely shocking - you were lucky if it survived at all - we had our TM box rebuilt twice, and it was never good.. one of my mates TN boxes died completely in all gears so we had to drive home in reverse (haha that was ****ing funny as.. across main intersections backwards!!) but the new ones were supposed to be heaps stronger and better - anything TR onwards.. but especially TH forward.. I think that a lot of the service guys are biased since they were working on all the old TM and TN shit ones they sorta taint the name..

Its sorta the same in my industry too though.. you get a run of bad stuff and it taints the name so no one recommends them anymore, but in actual fact there might be nothing wrong with em.
as long as you keep it in good nick and service it when its due for oil and dont run them dry or badly mistreat them like going from neutral to drive at 6000rpm or something it should take a bit of a thrashing..

they cant write that you can pull a hell heavy caravan with a stock auto with no auxilary oil cooler if it wasnt strong enuf to do it - what happens when everyone gets out there and breaks down?

hmmm... another point i should add.. which way would you indicate.. i mean.. when your facing traffic, does that mean you turn your 'right' indicator to turn 'left'
=D>

yes.. ill give you credit for that reverse effort... :D

Don't believe them about the boxes. They are a bloody good g/box, miles ahead of the crumbledoor and frauds in technology and design. Early Te's had a problem with the valvebody and alloy fragment contamination from factory but this was fixed long ago, they also had aproblem with the end clutch housing being too soft allowing metal sealing rings to chew through them but this too was fixed early on. These boxes as well as the ones in the first tm confused and scared a lot of mechanics and trannie experts as they were pretty complex so they just threw a lot of parts at them to fix one component and have gotten a bad rap ever since from people who have no idea.
The electrical side also confuses a lot of as they are fully electronic
with fuzzy logic control to adapt shift timing and pattern depending on driver and clutch pack wear. There was a problem with tf i think were 2-3 change would flare and many people thought it was worn clutch packs and the auto was stuffed when all it really needed was for the tcu to be reprogrammed (flashed) which i think just changed the shift timing mapping. It took all of 15mins to do but countless boxes were stripped and inspected for no reason.Every other manufacturer has there
probs too. Mitsubishi just has less ;)

Got to tell you the TE manuel i have has a SH#T gear box!!!

About 4 months ago i was driving to Macas (2 mins down the road) and i felt, herd a nasty thud. didn't pay much attention thought it was a pot hole but the next day it happened again and didn't stop. took it to no less than 5 transmition specilasts and had 5 different answers(bastards). Finnaly she just gave up, Had it towed  to a very highly recomened  trans specilast. he pulled it apart and said ALL the gears were gone :x . Any way $3000 later it was back but now it will NOT go in to gear unless i rev to about 2000 or the gear box oil is warm.

So no i dont think that the gear boxes are any where near one of the strongest std boxes there are :|

P.S i don't recomend Diff Trans at all...

hmmm.. you must of had a bad box, cos ive still got the stocky 5spd manual that came in my TE, and i can tell you now, it gets a good thrashing when i jump in a turn that key! ive never had ne problems, execpt for my clutch :S but thats different. the box itself has never had problems :D

feel sorry for ya, cos ive never had ne problems:) which is lucky for me i spose :S
